Forums - Nintendo - How much will Mario Kart 8 & Smash Bros U sell?

There has been alot of talk about Mario Kart/Smash Bros being the games that drastically improve Wii U sales but im not so sure they will. Currently Wii U is tracking behind Gamecube and I believe that these two games will push Wii U sales to GC/N64 levels so about 20-30m.

I know alot of people will say "but Mario Kart Wii sold 34m!!!!!". The thing with that game tho is that it fell in line with the mass market/casual games like Wii Sports, Wii Play, NSMB Wii, Just Dance, etc and benefited greatly from that market that seems to have left consoles for Smartphones/Tablets.

As for Smash Bros, it sold 12m on Wii but this time it will also be on 3DS so that will likely take away some of the console versions thunder.

All in all I believe these games will sell what they did in the pre Wii era. Mario Kart on SNES/N64/GC sold in the 7-10m range and Smash Bros on N64/GC sold in the 5-7m range.

it depends if the game will be better than its previous titles

Mario Kart 8 will do around 10 million and Smash Bros 4 will do around 8 million.. Having a 3DS version of Smash 4 is a stupid idea and I wonder what the heck was Nintendo thinking  when they decided to use this idea.

Mario Kart 8 - 8m

Super Smash Bros U - 7m (3DS version will hurt it)

Why so? I see this mentioned a lot but I don't think it will. The games are connected, but not simply identical ports for each console. Mario Kart DS sales certainly didn't hamper Mario Kart Wii sales after all.

Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart DS didn't release at the same time. A lot of people will see the game as identical and then only choose to buy one.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

I'm buyig two copies when it comes out.

Accounting an install base of MINIMUM 30 million:
Mario Kart 8 will sell 12-15 million lifetime.
Super Smash Bros U will sell 9-11 million lifetime.
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze will sell 5-6 million lifetime.
Super Mario 3D World will sell 8-10 million lifetime.
Pikmin 3 will sell 3-4 million lifetime.
New Super Luigi U will sell 4-7 million lifetime.
NSMBU will sell 12-14 million lifetime.
ZombiU will sell 2-3 million lifetime.
WindWaker HD will sell 3-5 million lifetime.
Lego City Undercover will sell 2-4 million lifetime.
Nintendo Land will sell 6-8 million lifetime.

MK: 10 million
SMB: 7 million

After 2014
MK: 2 million
SMB: 1.4 million

I am guessing 8 million for each

nice

I expect both games to initially sell much better than SM3DW which has sold pretty well over the few weeks it has been out.

By end of 2014 SSB should easily do 3m on the Wii U from what I expect to be a 10m minimum userbase.

Based on that assumed userbase I would give MK 8 sales of around 3.5m - 4m in the same period.

As for lifetime sales I couldn't say.
