Forums - Sony - Kadokawa Boss on PS4: It’ll Keep Development Costs Low; Wonders if it Can Revive Consoles in Japan

Developers were already creating higher res high polygon models last gen, and cutting them down to run on PS360. Now they have to do less work cutting back, and they also have well developed hardware, with deep libraries for delivering great performance.

This gen should see high quality games and at a much higher clip than last generation. I don't think we will se a lot of games being delayed beyond the initial launch titles that over reached.

Very true, given how well 7th gen games scale to 1080p. Even now, Resident Evil 5 maxed out in DX10 and 1080p is quite the looker, like seriously. I have a feeling this will be a very good gen for developers.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

I think any developer who targets X1, PS4 and PC doesn't have to worry too much about development costs. They share incredibly similar GPUs, x86 CPUs, RAM and perhaps even graphics APIs (dx11, opengl4, Mantle). This a really good deal for cross platform devs all over the world really.

Look at tales games than ask yourself why development cost will not increase. Ps2 games in 1080p 60fps. That's the future of ps4 japanese support.

Goodjob. Taking 1 franchise as an example and spell the doom of the whole japanese industry.

What about Deadrising, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Grand Turismo and a crapload other games? Now, maybe you can open your eyes.

Ummm... dev costs didnt rise? I have a feeling Japanese games will underperform tech wise this generation :| Maybe its for the better :-?

Some of the most impressive looking next gen games are from Japanese developers such as Deep Down, MGS V, and FFXV.

I dont know... tech demoes of great looking Japanese games showed up at the beginning of last gen too, but at the end of the day western tech dominated the gaming scene. Even Japanese puiblishers tried to jump on the bandwagon ( SE and its Unreal 3 fiasco) but didnt make it.

Im not saying that we wont receive pretty Japanese games, but what does Japanese developers have tech wise to rival Unreal 4, Cry 3/4, Frostbite 3/4 and a potential ID Tech 6?

Hmm he brings up an interesting point with the share button. If the Japanese are really into social features then that could be a huge selling point for them.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

I rather play a silly weird japanese game than a steroid filled mindless brain numb american shooter.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

First thing that pops to mind is Fox Engine.

Fox engine looks cool, but except Konami I doubt anybody else will use it. Maybe some niche Japanese developer. Reember the Crystal Engine from SE? WHo else used it? Nobody, because they dont make it cheap and user friendly enough, while almost anyone can use a licensed Unreal.

I do hope that the Japanese industry gets their shit together, as my favorite devs are Japanese, but seeing how they strugled this gen (tech wise) and how they chose to rather innovate on the handheld front, I doubt anything will change this gen.

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/kojima-has-no-plans-to-license-fox-engine-to-small-developers/1100-6414313/

Kojima said he would not license the Fox Engine to small developers cause there is "A lot of maintenance will be involved if we're to get the Fox Engine in a workable enough state to license it,"

But he does say he is  "always open to discussing it with companies one on one."

Pretty much sounds like he doesn't want his engine used in a way that makes it look bad so if anyone wants to use it they have to go to him and he has to be sure they will use it properly.

:( Now that sucks. It could have been a comercially viable and competent engine for many developers, and Konami could have made a name for themselves when it comes to 3rd party engines.

I never really got it why Japanese companies isolate themselves from the west, when it comes to tech. Is it the different work mentality? Fear of relying to much on outside developers? Cost effectiveness?

It probably boils down to a combination of those factors...
