Forums - Nintendo - WiiU Reaches 5m, congrats thread

Good Job, I hope these games move Wii Us until it outsells the PS4
Bayonetta 2
Yarn Yoshi
Super Smash Bros
X
Shin Megami Tensei
Hyrule Warriors
Unnannounced Third Party exclusive
Donkey Kong Tropical Feeze

The PS4 is likely to overtake it in the next few months and has already overtaken wii u in UK and possibly mainland Europe. Xbox One is already half way to matching it. Not forgetting that the ps4 and xbox one are aimed at older gamers who tend to be able to afford larger purchases throughout the year.

In Europe the original wii still outsells wii u most of the time and may well go back to outselling wii u after christmas. That's without any real marketing and many online wii features being discontinued. So Nintendo are killing it off but still it competes well with wii u. The market is saturated with original wii's too.

PS3 is doing 3x the number of consoles as wii u in Europe.

It's clear the wii u numbers in Japan and USA are better but Nintendo can't afford to let the wii u become irrelevant in Europe. If they don't watch out it could be quite a niche product in Europe only sold in limited outlets.

So what would be a decent number for the U to be at in December 2014?

12-13M LTD. It could maybe compete with X1's YTD numbers, but not with PS4's.

A MK8 or SSB bundle for $249 would sell like hotcakes in December 2014.

Two of their biggest franchises will be released (MK8 and SSB).

MK Wii sold 13.2M in it's first year, you can't expect that this number drops by almost 90% like New Super Mario Bros. U in December 2012, NSMB Wii was the first mainline sidescrolling Mario game on a home console since almost 20 years and NSMBU didn't feel "New" at all.

Super Mario 3D World seems to sell around the half of Galaxy 1. You can't do a proper comparison yet, because 3D World was released closer to christmas.

I expect MK8 to do at least 4M in it's first year (that would be 30% of MK Wii)

When the wii u sells badly it is "doomed". When it sells OK it "is still not selling as good as the other consoles". It changes from survival to winning.

I expect xbox one sales will be close to wii u. The wii u also had a good start. That doesn't mean much. Xbox One is looking already in a state of collapse in Europe.

The UK is irrelevant. It would be nice to have good sales there but it is a small part of a much larger pie. Just a small percent of 750m+ population in N America, mainland EU and Japan can see it relatively successful.

I agree therefore that for Europe Nintendo need to push the wii u so it can be a second console to compliment many PS4 owners. It's sales in Europe are not miles behind the xbox one and I expect they will stay that way since there are no supply issues with xbox one there and it's price.

Just as I predicted... I said on 22th this month that it should hit 5 million by now and it did, chances of hitting 5.5 million are not bad and if hits that then I am pretty sure it will hit 6 million in January...

Nintendo may reach its goal of having 9 million units by end of March, they did not said that they will sell 9 million units. They said that they expect to reach 9 million Wii U's sold since launch. Its just mainstream media stretching out of context statements as always, same with Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV when a developer said that it won't come to Wii U because of DirectX 11 yet in the interview he did not said anything about DirectX 11 at all nor the Wii U as it seems...

No, Nintendo gave the forcast of 9 million unitls by March 2014, its just Nintendo media/fans trying to spin it.  And im sure with the long development cycle of both kingdom hearts and FFXV, a Wii U version would have been annoucned with the other two.

I am not sure... I would not be surprised if they mistranslated since it happens a lot from Japanese to English, can you give me the link of the original statement and if possible from their website or something? Or does Nintendo makes statements at a press conference or something?

Uk is still pretty relevent, its the largest video game market in Europe and Europe as a whole is a very big market. At one point the UK was close to the retail level of game sales of Japan. Probably our rubbish weather means more people are likely to choose gaming as an entertainment medium. Uk is more of an open market probably not as polarised as mainland Europe.  I think Microsoft need to focus more on mainland Europe but Nintendo need to focus on the whole of Europe including UK.

Ultimately its brilliant to have 3 companies competing for our money. Sony look to be on firm ground so Nintendo and Microsoft will have to fight hard to make up lost ground in Europe. If Microsoft lose Europe as well as Japan it will be perceived as a US only console.
