Forums - Microsoft - Maximilian on the Kinect

Avid fighting gamer and all-around competitive gamer Maximilian has some words about the Kinect in particular with games that demand a controller but are forced into the Kinect approach. I agree with him about it. The Kinect is really just a Dance Central, fitness machine at best. Even in its latest state it doesn't have the ability to properly control games that demand proper movement and accurate control in a 3D environment. He's even spoken about the non-essential nature by using examples of where certain games would be more enjoyable by just using a controller instead of being forced to use the Kinect. I believe he gives exemption to specific games that allow you to use the controller, but in particular its the ones where the Kinect is forced upon you that are the least fun for him because of its lack of intuitiveness and proper detection. If it worked then he wouldn't have a problem but its clear as I've seen with others that a problem does exist.

What do you think?

Well, Kinect shouldn´t be seen as something replacing the controller, but more of an add-on I feel. I think it´s a bad decision too completely leave out the Kinect controls for Crimson Dragon since I would´ve preferred playing only with Kinect (I love Child of Eden!).

Also, when they played the Wave Race, weren´t he partially obstructing the Kinect by sitting where he sat, and isn´t the other guy steering wrong?

The only problem I have heard about Kinect Sports Rivals is the part where it maps your face, otherwise it is supposed to work great, if you steer correctly that is :).

Kinect has great potential for games, it is more of how developers use it, kind of like how smartphone games have developed through the years. It takes time before the full potenial is realized.

Go get Kinect 2.0. works great.

Ive used it. Its not essential but its cool to have.

I can't even play the jet ski game, it always tells me something is in the way, I move some shit around and then just gave up on it.

^Yes that's me ripping it up in the GIF. :)

I love it for everything it does other then motion gaming. The Skype, Voice Control and being able to recognize the user is pretty cool. Looking forward to seeing what the indie developers do with Kinect.

Who said otherwise?

Fun fact, they are playing Kinect Sports Rivals incorrectly. You don't move your body when playing that game, just move your arms forward and back. Had they watched the tutorial they would know that.

Fighter Within's problem isn't the Kinect and it wouldn't be fun with a gamepad either. It would just be a bad button masher with a gamepad. Fighters Destiny is just a waste of decent graphics.

Tried Kinect sports once and I will say that it worked very good. Xbox Fitness is pretty much the killer app for Kinect atm. Kinect will never replace the controller and I hope we don't see any more games that try to do that.

LOL guy is playing the game wrong. Just move your arms, not your entire body. And he needs to learn to put some touch on his steering. When driving a car, you don't jerk the wheel all the way to one side to make a turn.

His problem is he is going in expecting it to replace a controller and be just as good. It's a different experience.

When looking at the software available on Kinect or Kinect 2 I can't help but agree with him. While it wouldn't work for a competitive twitch action game I have a couple of control schemes in mind that could allow pretty natural movement in a 3d environment. Sad thing is the improvements of kinect 2 don't help at all for that purpose tehe.
