With the exception of that dissapointing GameCube 2002 in Japan that's fairly consistent across the board. Guess the Japanese really don't like Zelda/Metroid (Wind Waker and Prime 1) versus Mario and Smash. 

Comparing home console performance today to the 6th gen in Japan is kinda pointless, there's been a massive shift to portables since then.

I dont think there has really been that big og a shift to portables, I just think that most of the games aimed towards Japanese gamers are on the portables.  I think once Hyrule Warriors,X, and Bayonetta come out, Wii U sales over there are going to be crazy high.   Once the Japanese 3rd Party studios jump on, the Library will be the best in terms of Japanese games since the PS2.
