Forums - Sony - Apple to buy Sony?

I am a DIEHARD Nintendo fan. I naturally despise everything about Sony's playstation branch (the controllers, the games, the focus of their consoles, their pathetic attempt at handhelds). That being said, Apple is the worst thing for the industry and I would rather Sony/Nintendo join forces under one brand than deal with an Apple controlled Sony!

How sweet :) I would prefer that too.
But the only way it will happen is when nintendo buys sony's game division, it won't happen the other way around (atm).

I agree. Nintendo has a BUTT TON (much more than a ton) of extra cash whereas Sony is struggling so that would make the most sense.

I see a ton of people in this thread screaming Hell no....but can people provide a legit reason as to why it would be a bad thing? Serious question and not having a dig at anyone.

They only think in the sense of gaming (understandable). But sony is much more than that.
Apple would really benefit from all the patents of sony, music and movie bussines

The buyout would be a stupid idea. What would Apple gain from it? A company that had every resource one could possibly imagine for competing with Apple but couldn't do so because of retarded management? Also, Apple doesn't want to own content. They only want to create the technology where content can be created and consumed. If Apple bought Sony, chances are they would sell off their movie and music business as well as the PlayStation brand and then keep their R&D departments for television and mobile devices. Then again, why would Apple want to do that when they seem to be doing fine on their own?

The only type of buyouts Apple is interested in are the buyouts of much smaller, lesser known companies that serve a specific purpose.

Check out my art blog: http://jon-erich-art.blogspot.com

I would sell all my Sony equipment, I loathe Apple. Steve Jobs was a tool that supported some of the worst manufacturing and DRM practices, though Sony and MS are not much better. The only good he ever did was die and make me a little money in a short sell. Being an asshole, there's no app for that...

Now if google were to buy Sony
Google and Sony have similar business ethics.
Google likes to sell hardware on cost while hoping for profits from software like sony does for playstation.
Sony's designs are unrivaled and with google software they would be HUGE.
Google can afford to make Sony's entertainment business exclusive to their products thus a HUGE benefit to google's ecosystem.
Playstation can really help google's mainstream social media business as well integrating google+ and google hangouts to PS4.

Sony is virtually untouchable when it comes to patent infringment as they are the ONLY Android manufacturer not to ever get sued. With Sony's patents google will destroy apple/microsoft in court. Sony's patent portifolio is one of the largest in the industry. If that rockstar consortium went for 4.5 billion and moto went for 12.5 billion I really do wonder how undervalued Sony is.

I deem that in one huge move of protectionism this will be prevented by Japan itself.

The Japanese are waaay to stubborn to ever let something like this happen.

These are actually the most cogent points of all, Sony is very big in Japan, and they are extremely protective of their companies.

Yeah... except this is Apple.  Who is actually pretty big in Japan.  If anyone coud do it... it'd be apple.

Hell, Apple is DOMINATING the japanese phone market right now.

There's just almost nothing Sony could offer Apple, that Apple couldn't just as eaisly do themselves.   There's no reason for Apple to take on all of Sony's debt and unprofitable divisions.

If such a thing were to come to pass, I honestly don't think they would keep all of the unprofitable divisions, they'd either break them up and sell off the ones they aren't interested in, or just shut them down entirely.  Don't you think?  Sony has a major movie studio, and one of the larger music studios, and one of the larger groups of in-house developers, not to mention 2nd parties,  on top of all of the patents they hold.   Sony doesn't just make phones...afterall.  There's plenty there for Apple, who, of late have been very interested in content, could leverage into their own products/services.

And since they're so great at overcharging for....pretty much everything they sell, I'm sure they could make it profitable pretty quickly, especially if they sold off the divisions that they weren't interested in.

Still, all that aside, I don't want this to occur in any way shape or form.

Could they get rid of that stuff?  Sure.

While COMPLETELY tanking their reputation in Japan...

and while having paid for that stuff.

If they want patents, there are tons of other companoes that would be cheaper and honestly.

If anyone was going to buy sony to gut it down to it's profitable parts it'd be a "bain capital" type company or just some individual investors.

I don't see what Apple would want with Sony.

Apple is the bigger name... and they don't really have a use for most of Sony's products... which are losing money.

It'd be interesting from a content perspective to get the movie and song rights and eventually get iTunes exclusivity i guess.

Outside that though... it'd be a huge waste.

If anything I'd think they'd just buy stake in a spun off Sony Entertainment.

Exactly. A treasure trove is Sony's music label, and iTunes is huge for apple, I think it's one of their biggest cash cows, people tend to forget that.

Only problem is... you'd expect at LEAST the EU courts to hit apple hard if they tried to pull that.

I'd think at least.

A good point, but if a company is incapable of righting the ship, what then?  I mean, if there are no alternatives but to make serious sacrifices here, then what?

As I said though, I certainly hope that Sony fixes it's situation, I would not want to see anyone come along and scoop it up.

Sony fans would never allow anyone to buy the company.

I have plenty of money to buy bread several times over. I still prefer cereals.
