you kinda walk into this one, but it's quite possible to compare consoles to PC's like this simply because consoles do not have the massive trailer full of junk that is windows to be carried along behind them (except maybe the dreamcast and the original xbox since they both had modified versions of windows running under the hood)

I know which is why I had this comeback ready

But if I was moving a house I would rather have the giant trailer hanging off the back to carry it than a motorbike.

Also the OG Xbox didn't have a version of windows that plan was scrapped. The Xbox One on the other hand does have a version of windows running on there and from the sound of things is actualy more of a dead weight to games thanks to kinnect and the snapping stuff. Windows doesn't do anything close to reserving 10% of the GPU and two whole CPU cores, let alone the 3GB of RAM... Both the PS4 and XBOne have actually moved a lot closer to windows in terms of OS overhead.

I for the life of me cannot figure out what they would need 3GB for.  I assume they will give back at least a full GB eventually, but still...

Well... I would imagine that the original OS they were planning for the X1 might have used somewhere in the 1-2gb of Ram while sitting ready to snap functions into play at a word to Kinect, but what more than likely happened was after the E3 PR explosion they had to start modifying the OS to change the drm situation and to tack on more and more bits to make sure it all worked smoothly for launch day.

I'm sure once the first big update to the OS comes in it will have a more streamlined version of the OS where it wont need to be multiple builds all glued together but one that they'll have had more months to alpha/beta test properly and ensure it has a smaller footprint, should mean games later in the X1's life should have a far greater about of the Ram for themselves to use. Hopefully.

Technically, you can, in reality though, nobody will put in the effort since there is no "1st party" PC dev as no such thing exists.

Even if there were, which one of the hundres of thousand possible builds would they optimise their game for?

The dick in the box type obviously.
