Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft: First Xbox One indie games could launch around March 2014

Microsoft's quest to get indie games published on the Xbox One began in August with the announcement of the ID@Xbox program. Today, the leader of that effort said we could start seeing the first Xbox One indie games published in the first quarter of 2014.

According to Edge, ID@Xbox’s director Chris Charla stated, "I think it will be early in the New Year, in the first three months. I would say closer to the third month." That would seem to indicate that Microsoft is looking to publish the first Xbox One indie game sometime in March.

A few days ago, Microsoft announced that 32 game development teams had been picked to participate in theID@Xbox program. Charla said, "Some developers started developing for Xbox One, others already had games in development and are working on Xbox One versions. I would say they’re at all stages of development, honestly." He added that it was "hard to say" just how many games would be released in the first wave of ID@Xbox titles.

As reported previously, the ultimate goal is to allow anyone with a retail Xbox One unit to use it as a development platform to make and publish games for the console. Charla said developers of all skill sets could, in theory, make Xbox One games. " ... from coding a game in C++, to someone who can’t code at allusing something like Project Spark." There's no word on exactly when this will happen.

meanwhile ps4 had 5 ready at launch. i guess 5 months late isn't soo bad considering how long it took MS to take indies seriously.

Already a PS4 comparison? Good job.

OP: Good to hear, I think the first will be Super Time Force.

I think Xbox owners won't be in any shortage of indies and Arcades anytime soon.

Is Minecraft still considered an indie? I'm surprised we don't know more about it.

I'm glad for the sake of smaller developers and Xbox gamers that Microsoft is now paying attention on this front. However, I don't think we should forget so easily that they're only making a big show now because they were forced into it. It seems obvious to me that they rushed this new program together late in the game, perhaps when it became apparent that many small developers were putting the XO last in terms of platform importance. The people running the Xbox program dropped the ball on several fronts at the start of this generation and this is one of them.

Still, if they really do get their act together, this will be a blip on the radar. I know we have a lot of anti-small business gamers on these forums, which is just crazy to me, but I very much like when the big corporations aren't the only ones getting love. I hope for the sake of everyone that the people running Microsoft's new "indie" (I loathe that term) program are sincere and that they get things turned around for good.

The Indie games were a bunch of zero effort ports from other platforms.  Sony bragged about Indie innovation but we have yet to seen any innovative Indie games exclusive to PS4...

Meanwhile, as Sony talked about Indie innovation and love, MS announced they would publish Mojang's next game (Cobalt) first on X1...  Yes, a new Indie IP...  In case you haven't noticed new IPs are required for innovation.  Not ports of existing IPs...

Seriously, today, what exclusive, great, and innovative Indie games can I buy on the PS4 that are so worth going out and spending $400 on the console for?  I already have a PC and can get a far better experience by playing the Indie games already there.

Your comment lacks substance and all you do is troll Xbox threads.

Sure, that's what indies need, exclusivity.

I mean, touching more public and making more sales is so overrated.

i dont know about other people but i buy a console to play games, not budgets. fact of the matter is that bastion, an indie game, has been more enjoyable to me than a lot of other big AAA games out their. To The Moon is one of my favorite games of all time. and limbo is just an outstanding experience. sure, an uncharted or red dead redemption game might be the game that draws me to buy the console when i eventually do buy one. but it doesnt mean that i shouldnt care about what indie games that console has.

but yeah, i would "brag" about a game like Bastion, because its fucking awesome.
