Forums - Sony Discussion - Why Do People Act Like Sony (Computer Entertainment) Doesn't Have Financial Problems?

Well because not only is the PS3 making money now, but they are already making profit off the PS4 and it has not even been a month since launch.

When the PS3 launched they had everything against them and still managed to turn it around, now with the PS4 they have everything going for them there is almost no way for them not to do good this gen.

Even if PS4 is the fastest selling console in history, it doesn't make sense to ingore how financially unsuccessful the PS3 was and pretend it was a huge financial success because it sold 80 million. I can understand why the "journalist" do it though. Since It's mostly used in negative Nintendo articles, Nintendo fanboys will keep going back to the website to see if they put up more negative Nintendo articles. It's sort of like what YouTube trolls do to get views.

And how does it benefit any consumers to woe over the financial mishaps of the PS3?

Today is the one month mark, actually.

Whenever I see articles about how the Wii U is doomed, lots of the writers talk about Sony like they never loose money and are perfect. It's like they're completely ignoring how much money the PS3 lost. Does anyone here know why people do this?

The PS3 lost a lot of money early on but Sony also profits off of Blu Ray and they turned profit on the PS3 three years ago. The PS3 has been pure profit since then.

Being that Microsoft tried to kill off Blu Ray and are not using it and Nintendo refused to use any format Sony backs and both in the end turned out conforming shows Sony's success through risk.

sony definitely isn't what it used to be.
it's got a ton of problems, but their gaming division is one of the few bright spots left, hence why the company is putting everything it has into the ps4 at the moment.

In what way are you referring? Everyone knows ps3 lost money, but sometimes people cross the line saying "it erased all profit from ps1/2", or "sony won't release another console because they are in financial ruin". Sometimes people write things like that and it starts an argument because the people saying it completely believe it, but the reality is completely different.

If you'd like I can post a dozen threads saying that ps4 would never come out, and how it was a marketing trick or some such nonsense, because Sony couldn't actually afford to come out with a new console. We easily see now in retrospect that those ideas were just wishful thinking, but people continue to think that Sony will back out of the gaming business even though it's probathe top 3 revenue streams. It just simply makes no sense to think that playstation doesn't do well. Despite losing around 5b on ps3, they ushered in Bluray, which they own 30% stake of, helped sell tvs, and helped to usher in HD faster than normal. Sure they probably still lost 4b even with this added revenue streams, but now BRs are extremely cheap to make now that they've produced 80 million of them, a rival company is paying them to use it, and it's secured BR as a top media device for the next gen. These are all very important things to think about and just looking at this current "next-gen" it's put them in a very advantageous footing. Wouldn't you say?

I dont think people are denying that sony has financial problems, samsung has been working on a hostile takeover for some time now and they have debt issues. But the reality is a lot of japannese companies have similiar problems with debt and they are still hanging on.

I personally dont think sony will be the same company in 10 years, with various parts of it business sold off, including the very valuable playstation brand. Only time will tell but the success of the ps4 certainley makes it more attractive to potential takeovers.

Why would Sony sell off the PlayStation brand when it is one of the most successful brands the company has ever produced? Additionally, the last time I checked, Sony's revenue, income, profits, assets and equity have all improved this year indicating that the overall health of the organization is improving. Finally, how are the early struggles of the PS3 relevant to the WiiU today? There are very few similarities between not only those products but also the companies that manufacture them and the demographics that they appeal to.

It doesn't. 80 million consoles sold is a very good number, but It's pretty sad when 80 million sold doesn't make a profit. Basically, PS3 was a huge success with everything except profit.
