The PS3 lost a lot of money early on but Sony also profits off of Blu Ray and they turned profit on the PS3 three years ago. The PS3 has been pure profit since then.
Being that Microsoft tried to kill off Blu Ray and are not using it and Nintendo refused to use any format Sony backs and both in the end turned out conforming shows Sony's success through risk.
