You know what's funny? The fact that the same people who held up the PS3 and 360 as having the best games, and derided the Wii for appealing to the masses but not having good games, are now defending the PS4 and Xbox One as being the systems that appeal to the masses despite the game quality, while deriding the Wii U for not selling games well enough, even if the games are higher quality.
And Metacritic had been their great symbol of quality - they always pointed to the number of PS3 and 360 games with a high Metacritic score, and the fact that it was higher than that of the Wii, to prove that the 360 and PS3 were the better systems. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, they bash Metacritic as being meaningless in the face of popular opinion.
And their justification for the claim that the PS4 and XBO are the better systems? Because of "more popular appeal"... never mind that neither system has sold anywhere near as many units as the Wii U (and yes, despite the 1 year lead, it is a relevant observation).
As of end of November...
PS4 tie ratio: 2.454
XBO tie ratio: 2.822
WiiU tie ratio: 3.205
So the claim that Wii U owners aren't buying games is just plain wrong.
EDIT: Notice that I make no disparaging remark about the PS4 or XBO. Or the PS3, or the 360. I wouldn't, because I'm a real gamer - I consider gaming to be what matters. PS4 and XBO will get their top-rated games, in time. And Wii U will get more top-rated games, too. The console war absurdity needs to stop - we are all gamers, and whether you prefer the PS3, 360, Wii, PS4, XBO, WiiU, 3DS, PSV, PC, or any other system, you should be celebrating the broad range of options we have, and not outright attacking other systems and celebrating poor results.
If you call yourself a gamer, and engage in console wars, then you're lying to yourself, and to everyone else.
