Forums - Gaming - Why do specs matter for home consoles but not handhelds?

Specs matter in fan arguments.

Price matters when it comes to sales.

Pokemon matters when it comes to handhelds.

I'm sorry, but to me SPECS DO MATTER.

1st off, we gamers desirve a great handheld system. Like why not. Cell phone have great tech year over year. TV's have great tech year over year. Every single entertainment tech pushes their tech with newer itterations, so why not handhelds.

Video games are not just a hobby anymore. Billions of dollars are made year after year, kids go to school to learn video game development now, its a big thing.

Having better specs in the device gives the developers more freedom to create bigger better and more creative games. One of the biggest reasons for me buying a psp was the tech. Im a gamer at heart and I want the best tech possible in my game machines. Imagine if more developers put their waight behind the Vita. We would see some truly innovative titles, just look at Tearaway and Gravity Rush.

I understand its sometimes all about the games on a handheld that makes it sell well, but I think if we dont push these hardware makers to create stronger handhels, we would be stuck with a Nintendo only vision of Handheld systems. And that to me is a nightmare. I love my Vita. The tech in it is superb and again, we gamers deserve as good as specs as most other devices on the market.

Vita isnt better, or is ist Able to produce 3D

it doesn't matter for neither one.

"The Vita is far more powerful than the 3DS, perhaps the same power gap as the PSOne and Wii U "

the vita isn't far more powerfull than 3ds and ps4/xone aren't far more powerfull than wii u.

"Wii U is getting spanked by the PSOne and will soon be overtaken in sales."

wrong on both.

" Specs - it's 8 year old technology/not next gen/not powerful enough, etc."

that's not a problem, that's a lie.

It does cause when Vita seemed like a competitor to the 3ds and the sales weren't too far apart, Sony fanboys needed an excuse to say why the Vita would beat the 3ds in sales cause of blah reason... Usually power is always the first thing that fanboys go to in order to justify the purchase...

Consoles and handhelds are not about specs...

They are about innovations people want and are willing to pay for...

Sometimes, to get these innovations you need new devices with a minimum set of specifications...

Bolded Agree 110%..But I thought people bought a gaming console for...games? Innovation is a loaded word, much like creativity (imo). Just make the right games and people buy the box.

The op is funny in that it tries to guide the convo as if the premise is acceptable. It isn't. Specs never mattered and they never will.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

1. Small screens make it less relvant.
2. 3DS is bit better than gamecube (better than Wii in some aspects as well). Vita is half the PS3. So it really the gap is smaller than the Wii/PS3 gap. It's similar to the DS/PSP gap, probably a bit better.

The handheld experience in general is very different than a home console. Graphics don't mater as much. Also publishers aren't willing to spend on high costing software on the Vita especially on a handheld where like I said it doesn't make THAT much of a difference. It's better to have better graphics but it's not a key element like on a home console.

3ds is more powerful than Vita. You obviously never saw a kaizar post.

They dont matter in theory for home consoles aswell. But, this time around because american companies got such huge relevancy on the market last cycle, they are now in the position to block the Japanese companies if they dont do their bidding. Basically what happened to Nintendo. They block you out of the engines and you get no third party support even if the third parties would like to release the game on your console.
There is an unseen bottleneck on this american dominated market and that is that there arent many engines available because its too costly to develop one. This means almost everyone is force to work with Epic and the unreal engine.

I still think people are overreacting at these launch numbers. If you look at the last 4 years, almost all of the games on 360 and PS3 did great in the 1st week and then no one cared and they got cheap fast. Even Halo 4 is only $15 bucks now and it has only been out for 1 year. I'm not saying the new consoles won't keep selling but I would'nt be shocked if the initial massive burst was followed by a big plop, after all the Shooter/FIFA fans get their console. The Wii U had a really good launch too and once the games stopped coming out and everyone who wanted one, got one, the sales went in the toilet.

everyone knows that.
