Forums - Nintendo - What is more important for Wii U: strong holiday or sustained momentum in 2014?

Sometimes I think I'm a bit strange. The Gamecube is still my favourite console of all time. I'm really starting to like the Wii U as well... I'm certainly not trying to be different, but the less popular consoles seem to gel with me. That said, I really liked the 360 and SNES as well.

Could go either way, i think Nintendo need to just focus on their core fanbase. No matter what they do they aint going to tempt many Sony/Microsoft fans over (unless some fancy a secondary console). They should continue to support Wii U with quality software, and hopefully make money from good attatch rates for their games , we have seen evidence of thus far. Good software and pricing should keep getting them modest sales spikes and this should keep them ticking over a bit like the Cube gen. Thankfully like in the past, they have a very successful handheld watching their backs.

Hoping for both but if there isn't a huge boodt from Black Friday until Christmas, I'll have to settle for good monthly sales. We take what we can get.

Its funny that all the consoles i have enjoyed the most have been the lesser sellers..From GameCube and Wii U ( my personal faves) to Saturn and Dreamcast. Perhaps mainstream success doesnt always equal quality, or perhaps we are just stange :D

No offense but this kinda sniffs of pre-emptive damage control because some Nintendo fans have spent the better part of a year hying up the year end 2013 period as a guaranteed 3DS like turn around and now we're supposed to buy the "well, 2013 was never important anyway, it's all about 2014" line?

If its a healthy platform it should have both a good holiday season and good momentum into next year, it should not be a case of either/or. That line of reasoning doesn't make any sense really, I mean if people are not buying the system with NSMBU/Mario 3D World/Wii Party/Wii Sports/Pikmin 3/Wii Fit/Sonic/LEGO, then that doesn't bode well at all for something like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (which is a shame because I love that franchise).

There's no excusing a modest holiday.

this i havent seen this level of damage control since PS3. Hell the damage control doesnt bother me its the history revisioning that is sad.

Tagged for later.  I have a link I want to paste that you'll get a kick out of.  Unfortunately, I'm on my phone.

both

Surely one is needed for the other? Unless of course Nintendo push back most of their software to the latter part of next holiday, price cut $100 and do mass mass advertising.

I dont see how its damage control, just a simple question. A huge holiday of 4m+ wont mean much if weekly sales drop back down to 20-30k early next year. I think it would be better in the long term if this holiday is modest, say 2m in Nov+Dec then weekly sales of 70-100k throughout the early months of next year. Of course the ideal situation would be a huge holiday boost along with continued momentum next year.

Good momentum in 2014.
