Neither console sold out.
There were PS4s available post launch and there were Xbox Ones available post launch.
Both consoles were widely unavailable, meaning most retailers were sold out in most retail outlets.
What we don't know is how many units were available on launch day for each console at each retailer. Sony sold nearly 1M units on the PS4s launch day. Microsoft sold 1.2M units on launch day.
If you want to make the argument that Microsoft had consoles left, fine. Microsoft also shipped more units total and they also sold more units on launch day. There's no way Microsoft could have sold 1.2M units without also have shipped more units.
So if Microsoft had more units in the field, than they'd have more units to sell. Whether they sold them on launch day or Black Friday.
For you non US members of VGChartz, if you don't know what Black Friday is and you aren't aware of how hectic it is as a shopping day, look to the images of what you saw in Germany for the PS4 Launch. That's what it's like here every year. And that's a nation of 300+ million, no a paltry 60+ million. People die on Black Friday just trying to get a deal.
If Microsoft had additional stock available after their launch for Black Friday and Sony didn't guess who benefits? Microsoft! What you may end up seeing is both the Xbox One and the PS4 selling well during the same week with the difference been smaller than what I'm assuming people will believe it to be.
I'm not saying the PS4 won't sell more, it may very well have. I'm just suggesting that the if Microsoft had additional stock available but Sony didn't for Black Friday, it's gonna benefit Microsoft in the end because the general public will opt for one or the other, and if a retailer is smart they'll sell what's available today. If they have Xbox One's in stock, that means they'll sell Xbox Ones.
A parent is going to look at it and say, we already have an Xbox 360. I saw the commercial for the Xbox One. Although little Johnnie wants a PS4, we're getting an Xbox One because that's what's available and because that's what we already have, Xbox.
