Forums - Gaming - Kotaku: Installing Xbox One Games Takes Way Too Long

ExtremeTech tested NBA 2K14, and their results were similar to the OP ("instant" vs 6 minutes from the first time the disc is inserted. Once the game was installed, the differences were only a few seconds (with the XBox One a little faster than the PS4).

PS4 vs. Xbox One speed test results

Cold boot to main dashboard –
PS4: 20 seconds — Xbox One: 1 minute 5 seconds
Standby/hibernate to dashboard –
PS4: 3 seconds — Xbox One: 12 seconds
Installing NBA 2K14 from disc –
PS4: 36 minutes – Xbox One: 46 minutes (see note below)
Time for NBA 2K14 to be playable after inserting disc –
PS4: Instant — Xbox One: 6 minutes
Time to load NBA 2K14 main menu from the dashboard –
PS4: 38.7 seconds — Xbox One: 29.6 seconds
Time to load a playable Quick Match in NBA 2K14 from main menu –
PS4: 37.6 seconds — Xbox One: 31.4 seconds
Time to switch between playable game, to the dashboard, and back to the game –
Negligible difference between the PS4 and Xbox One. Both are almost instantaneous.

from the time i pressed the PS button on the controller, until i was in a level in Killzone took 43 seconds.

it took 25 seconds just for system to turn back on, but it only took 18 seconds from the point of clicking on killzone to get into the campaign level.

Can you make the test using the StandBy mode... not the cold boot... thanks.

As I said before:

It appears Sony has inforced this feature into games to certification. It was a big deal to do everything different (and better ) than the PS3.

If that became a issue Microsoft would be able to improve the install time.

PS: To bad this will not matter for open world games, unless they have a cinematic to conseal.

The PS4's ARM CPU do the install job... so while the game is not installed it load from the Blu-ray and install the minimum to start the game... after that it start to use the assets installed in HDD while the ARM CPU install the later levels.

Yeah... looks like Magic.

So fast.

You can have sex while it is installing the games. Big deal.

There are something wrong... the cold boot is ~20s... the Standby is less than 5s.

Cold boot to main dashboard –
PS4: 20 seconds — Xbox One: 1 minute 5 seconds
Standby/hibernate to dashboard –
PS4: 3 seconds — Xbox One: 12 seconds

Using your times... 5s (Standby) + 18s (Load Killzone to play)... 23s total

It sucks on PS3, so very happy issue made more palatable on PS4. As for X1, no idea why Microsoft did not think of this seeing as it was an advantage they had last gen.

If people think it is a lie, I watch a YouTube show called "FarFromSubtle" and they get all major games and show them off. Here is their big day one X1 playlist, video in particular is watching Ryse install and update taking a good 20 minutes to finally get to play.

If you think this is a bash X1 thing, they actually give Ryse a fair shake and enjoy the game, just the initial install and update is very annoying to deal with.

I think this may be because MS planned to have literally EVERYTHING from the disc on their console. They were prepared for discs to not be relevant after one download.

Is my PS4 broken? Took 30 seconds from button press to OS from standby.
