Forums - Sales - Final Fantasy XIII-3 And Mario 3D World Bomb In Japan (Also Vita TV Bomba!)

Just a little perspective. So what now? It seems like shit just got real. WiiU is going nowhere in Japan this year and it seems like its a reality we will just have to accept.

Well let's be honest SM3DW is targeted at the western audience as Mario games sell way better in the west, if X and SMT x FE fail to sell Wii Us then its time to worry.

At first I was going to say that sounds pretty low, but then someone posted a chart of all past 3D Mario games in Japan. Seems a little low, but not abysmal given the installed base of the Wii U.

It's not the install base. It's the game or should I say the style of game. Japan does not like 3D mario yet Nintendo in all their "genius" couldn't see that fact from past efforts yet they continue to kill any momentum by releasing yet another one. Stupid Nintendo! Why you so stupid?

2D Mario didn't sell it. Wii Party, Wii Sports Club, Wii Fit U, haven't done anything either (so much for casuals). Game & Wario flopped. Nintendo Land did not take.

So 3D Mario has some company, I've been saying for weeks its unfair for Nintendo fans to put such a burden of "saving" this system on one game and all the silly "no one buys a Nintendo console for a 2D Mario! 3D Mario will save it!" was equally stupid.

In terms of HW sales i guess Mario doesn`t usually do a lot for home consoles (at least).

Found this on neogaf:

GCN before Sunshine: 8.242
GCN Sunshine Launch: 31.750

Wii before Galaxy: 34.766
Wii Galaxy Launch: 40.836

Wii before Galaxy 2: 17.870
Wii Galaxy 2 Launch: 21.304

Wii U before 3D World: 14.006
Wii U 3D World Launch: 20.177

Why do the Nintendo fans never realize facts like these prior to a game's release. It's always like they get some kind of a revelation after the numbers are known. I've been saying for a while now that 3D World wouldn't help much and nobody backed me up with these numbers

lol, I'll agree with you on that. Where was this revelation like two weeks ago, when "Mario 3D World will of course cause a big spike!"

I personally wasn't expecting much more from Lightning Returns. It's the second sequel to a main entry, which I did not think would even pass the previous sequel (XIII-2), so I wouldn't really say it bombed. In the very least, I'm still planning on buying it when it comes out in the US. Besides, I'm guessing Lightning Returns isn't as costly develop, since it is likely building off the assets of the first two games.  The first week sales for the Mario 3D World is a bit disappointing, but hopefully it will have legs, particularly in the west.

I don't think Square Enix expected much from FF13-3. So the sales are probably not that bad. Saying that I hope the game does send the message to Square Enix to stop making these games, or any game anything like FF13.

....seriously? 3D Mario is not popular in Japan, that's what we're claiming now? Your graph proves the complete opposite, nearly every 3D Mario has sold over a million units in Japan, which is something hardly any game series can claim about itself over there. 3D Mario is popular in Japan.

Not as much as 2D Mario.

So? That doesn't mean 3D Mario is not popular in Japan, over a million in sales per game means it's still extremely popular in Japan.

Fixed that for ya.

Things that need to die in 2016: Defeatist attitudes of Nintendo fans

Mario 3D Land caused a nice spike for the 3DS though. From 66k to 137k (Mario 3D Land week).

I think branding the game "Mario 3D World" was a mistake too. For starters it doesn't really even make much sense as the 3D bit in the SM3DL title is to reference the 3D screen, second it just gives the impression of "well I already have this game on my 3DS, why should I buy a Wii U for it?".

I think Nintendo was hoping the combo of NSMBU + Wii Party U hardware bundles + Wii Sports Club + Wii Fit U trial + Mario 3D World + Taiko Drum Master would cause a large boost and act as kind of a "relaunch" for the system in Japan. They were wrong.

Basically they were banking on the "Wii casual" + Mario fan audience carrying them this holiday. Casuals have betrayed them, I think that much is obvious. Only reason Wii Party U is putting up respectable numbers in Japan is because it comes bundled with the system whether you want it or not.

As a standalone release it's a bomb.

Yeah SM3DW is kinda bomb-ish but it can't do any better as long as the system isn't more widespread. This year's bundles don't cut it. Noone cares for Wii Sports / Fit / Party anymore, and it comes across as desparate to throw out so many different bundles. Nintendoland is just another minigame collection, you can't turn heads with minigames anymore. There's been hundreds! Even NSMBU... I first played it last weekend, and I was surprisingly underwhelmed. N have focused to much on repeating what worked last time around. Big fan of NSMBWii here, yet NSMBU just felt like I've done it all before. Based on just a few levels of world 3 in co-op, mind - so my opinion could change.

Kart is the one franchise that will just keep selling. Cause once you're hooked (and everybody is) you just want more tracks. It's going to be the #1 Wii U game.

but wasnt that the point? wasnt this supposed to move consoles? oh well there is always Americas and Europe

To be honest, i too had no idea of how little Mario pushes HW on home consoles.
