Forums - Microsoft - Ryse: Son of Rome - the Digital Foundry verdict

Wow selnor I've been hearing ppl talk about your hyperbole; but man I never saw it personally until recently since the XBO release.

I appreciate your enthusiasm and totally get liking an underrated game; but, man, your rose tinted glasses must be extra..erm...rose tinted. I predicted Ryse was gonna be terrible the moment I saw the very first teaser. Every video and trailer since then, as well as the reviews, echoed that sentiment quite clearly. To each their own, and that's totally fine; but, it seems your like for Ryse goes way beyond the game itself (I.e. Things would likely be much different had Ryse been multiplat).

Ryse looks amazing, pretty much on par with Killzone: Shadow Fall although the latter is pushing a higher framerate, resolution and scale so it is more technically impressive, but just looking at them they're as pretty as each other really. However, these games may be the best looking launch games but are going to be noticeably surpassed within a year, it'll be interesting to compare The Order 1886 with Quantum Break, the best looking exclusives next year.

Also we won't see what next gen consoles are capable of until Sony Santa Monica show their game, their first PS3 game looks better than all the other top technically accomplished studios like Naughty Dog, Epic, Guerrilla, Crytek etc 2nd, 3rd or 4th games and with better AA + effects (filmic motion-blur & dof) + performance too.

"Furthermore, as the first title designed using the latest iteration of CryEngine middleware, it's interesting to consider how it stacks up against previous PC releases. Crysis 3, released earlier this year, maxes out Titan-class GPUs at its very high quality setting - even before higher-end anti-aliasing settings have been engaged. Bearing in mind the gulf in power between top-end PC graphics card and the more lowly Xbox One, it speaks to the flexibility of the engine and the advantages of fixed-platform console architecture."

Dat power/cost ratio. Quite impressive for the Xbox One. This is the main reasons why I say PC gaming in general is usually pointless. You either buy a GTX Titan to max out games that could be optimized for lower-end GPUs, or for games that don't even need all that power. $1,000 wasted.

Their verdict also bodes really well for Killzone as the launch graphics king.

Might want to learn about PC gaming before you say stuff like that. I didn't spend $1000 dollars on my GPU setup but I have more power than a Titan albeit with less RAM.

Crytek has faced a long and difficult road in the development of Ryse. As a game that began life on Xbox 360 as a Kinect-exclusive title, we imagine that the final product seen here today shares very little in common with the original design. And yet, despite the challenge this must have represented, Ryse stands as the first real technical showpiece on the Xbox One that delivers visuals that exceed anything we could have experienced on a last-generation console. It also serves as proof positive that a lower-resolution output can still deliver excellent, clean results. When it comes to delivering attractive results, image treatment is a critical part of the equation that a higher resolution alone will not solve.

Furthermore, as the first title designed using the latest iteration of CryEngine middleware, it's interesting to consider how it stacks up against previous PC releases. Crysis 3, released earlier this year, maxes out Titan-class GPUs at its very high quality setting - even before higher-end anti-aliasing settings have been engaged. Bearing in mind the gulf in power between top-end PC graphics card and the more lowly Xbox One, it speaks to the flexibility of the engine and the advantages of fixed-platform console architecture.

All of which begs the question: could these new consoles run Crysis 3? Ryse delivers the full suite of CryEngine features with excellent image quality and it's still just a launch title. Given the experience of working on such a product, we have little doubt that Crytek could produce a Crysis Trilogy of sorts for next-generation consoles with few compromises - and yes, we want it. Given the quality of the developer's work on Xbox One, we would love to see what it could do with PlayStation 4 in the future as well. However, despite all the technological finery on offer, the limited and repetitive gameplay make Ryse difficult to actually recommend as a prospective purchase. That said, if you really want a taste of what we can expect from the next generation of consoles, Ryse towers over the rest.

Awesome. I have been blown away by the graphics in all the Skydrive little tidbits people have been uploading. And more importantly, the game looks like it's a blast to play. I am sure they exist, but I have not seen a single person playing the game say negative things about it. I really think it's going to be another Conan for me personally, a game critically flawed but one I could play through over and over again.

Get in line:

I thought you said that when you returned you were going to change Selnor.

This thread is about Ryse, not Selnor or Killzone.
