Forums - Website Topics - Ps3 frozen. Can't turn it off.

Well, huh...I've been watching Cole MacGrath's back for a while now. I removed the disc. I pressed the Power button with all my force. It doesn't do anything. The Ps3 is frozen and I can't turn it off.

The Ps3 is not mine, by the way... so I need advise. What the hell can I do now?

EDIT: This is a slim Ps3. That means, no power switch at the back of the console.

remove the plug from the wall

Uggggh. What could be the consequences of doing so?

Just pull the power cable. It will restore the file format at the next start, but in 99.9 % of all cases, everything will be fine after that. No data lost or anything.

idk, the console turning off? XD

whenever i'm in a situation where an electrical device doesn't work i just yank the power cord.

Okay guys. I did that. Now the Ps3 is back, but it's telling me it needs to restore some lost archives or something.

In any case, thanks for the help!

The consequences of doing it  would be nothing.

A switch basically cuts off the power cord into 2.

ON= PS3 _____|_______wall     It does not matter if its inside the PS3phat or

VS
                         _|_
OFF= PS3____      _____wall

Pulling the plug out of the wall does the exact same thing. So this is what you should do. (if you have an extension use it instead)

Do not pull the plug out of the console tho there is the possibility of damaging it. (part of the cable still having contact the other part not etc... This probably wont happen but dont try it

This is a pretty interesting info, you know? What's the difference between pulling the plug out of the console and out of the wall?

I don't recall my PS3 (fat) ever freezing during a game but it would freeze all the damn time during browser use.  I'm talking probably over a hundred times.

Fortunately there's a switch in the back for that on mine and only once did I have a problem when it did its check/restore function.  Everything on my console was still there, but all of my videos, pictures, etc were rearranged and (I think) renamed as well.

But yeah, since you have a Slim, if it ever freezes again:

I edited my post before you replied.  So part of the answer is in there  ;)

Basically it is like that. When you pull a cord out of a console  a part of the plug can still have contact while the other one already lost it.
(remember the Pokemon Gameboy "cloning"? Where when only 50% of the link cable contacts had contact with the Gameboy it would not send info to one of the 2 Gameboys?)

A power cord also has several prongs/contacts.
When you pull it out of the console  the e.g ground prong can lose contact but the other ones could still have contact.

Since electricity can travel short distances by air it can result in a ghostbusters (DO NOT CROSS THE STREAMS) effect.
On consumer electronics the  "device end" of of a cable is also less safe than the "wall end" (wall end has thicker plugs and more secure connection etc).
Plus when you pull the plug out of the wall the electricity traveling through it can somewhat stabilize before it reaches your device.

Its not 100% scientifically correct but thats basically what happens  ;)
