I don't think anything is certain this gen. MS are chasing a much wider audience than Sony is, if that works then even if Sony wins the gamers mindshare then MS may win the console gen. It is impossible to really tell at this point in time.

What does MS offer the wider audience that would get them to shell $500?

Most game consoles aren't moved at launch price. To coin a term... its a jog, not sprint.

MS has had more success at appealing to casuals thanks to the Kinect. Sony has chased after that same audience as well with little success.

Actually, marathon is a better word. The casual audience are never around for long. Ask Nintendo.

I'm pretty sure he means entirely in the context of the Wii. Aside from the cocky launch of the 3DS, Nintendo's always had a consistent stronghold in the handheld market.

Nintendo completely dropped the ball on the Wii U. It should have came with a Wiimote, not that stupid tablet.

The X1 is coming with a Kinect and that's actually a desired piece of technology.

It's true that the 3DS is selling well because of the casuals but don't forget how many casuals left for smartphones from DS to 3DS.

Anything can happen between now and the end of the new current generation that has started for all of a week now.

Well

The ps2 sold ~150m units

The ps3 ends with like 100m at best?
That is 50 million less.

The Xbox 1  sold ~25m units.    (you know the original xbox not the xbox one...... seriously the new xbox one has a shitty NAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
The 360 ends up with maybe 85m? thats 340% more consoles sold than last gen.

Sony already lost this generation by userbase increase/decrease. (they are the only ones that lost customers)

Last gen Sony had a huge advantage with its userbase because the xbox brand was not established at all and they almost lost this gen in terms of numbers. Now its competing with an established brand so there is no guarantee they will win.

Todays gamers are for the MOST PART (not all of them) not gamers at all they are mainstreamers and people that want to be entertained. And if the X1 offers enough value for people that want entertainment and want an all in 1 box then MS could easily win.

The time when consoles were made for gamers (or well the games were made for gamers) is long gone the last remnant is Nintendo. So time will tell not some random prediction.

If PS3 sells 100M and the 360 sells 85M, then MS lost to Sony.

Only in the unlikely scenario that there's a huge quality software drought. With all the third parties on board though I can't see that happening.

If there is another "Wii" type frenzy. The Wii U is certainly not going to be that.
