Forums - Sony - Killzone Shadow Fall metacritic FLOP CONFIRMED: 73 on 17 reviews

flop is such a harsh word. In todays gaming industry and with todays gaming community  ratings are not what matters but visuals. And tbh Killzone is the best looking shooter since 2007's Crysis for PC.

So it will do great

We dont need more grey/brown games.

Yes. And both had a larger install base and better scores, afair.

KZ:SF will still outsell them.

Hmm, doubtful to me. Perhaps because of lack of other good games... I will have to buy it, too, because I don't know which game I should buy else.

Just because you think that you're forced to buy a game doesn't mean other people think the same. Most people will only buy a game if they want to.

I was only supporting your claim SF will sell more than KZ2 and 3 and then this reply... I can't help you any further

You could be supporting the claim but you were still putting forward the wrong reason. Not unexpected from you though.

Since when was a 70 a flop?

For AAA games a 70 is pretty low hence why people consider it a "flop".

Still has time to get higher though, there's only 18 reviews...

What? Why getting personal now? Man, some users here... At least I gave a reason, you didn't.

And yet, the Saturn which came out before the PS1 failed miserably. They got lucky but somehow Nintendo and Sega didn't? What gives? At the end of the day, Sony has the top 2 best selling games on the PS1, created the Crash and Spyro series and made FF the brand that it is worldwide.

How did Sony make the FF brand that it is WW? It was huge already on SNES. Dont get me wrong, i kno which are the best selling but dont alot of people love the original 3 or 4 games?

Wrong, it was big in Japan, selling 2.62M (but Square charts show that that includes the PS1). FF6 only sold 860,000 in the west - as of the 31st of March 2003, which means that worldwide, it wasn't that big.

Actually t-bone like Lawlight says, the only reason Final Fantasy VII got a worldwide release was because of Sony. FFVII was the first Final Fantasy game to even get released in Europe. (There were a pair of average spin off games but none of the main series).

Sony didn't get lucky, they were just very humble and worked very hard in the early days of the PS1. Final Fantasy VII was originally a Saturn title after Nintendo opted to stick with cartridge. However Sony offered to publish their games for them globally if they made it for the PS1. Sega offered no such thing and it's likely the games would have remained elusive to Europe.

They did similar with Namco, hence they published Ridge Racer/Tekken etc. Even though they were the underdog, the "extra services" they chucked in made it worthwhile for Namco "yeah we know you don't have a big Western Presence... we'll handle all that for you" is just too good to turn down. No Daytona/Sega Rally/Virtua Fighter to compete with like they would have had on the Saturn helped to tip things in Sony's favour too.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

What bothers me is that, even without anything resembling a killer app at launch, the PS4 will likely sell gangbusters. I have no problem with the PS4 winning the 8th gen, but I'd like it if Sony earned it.

Has any system in the last decade had a killer app at launch though? Even then, how many system before that were fully equipped with a killer app at launch?

Focusing on exclusives and new games...

Well, the Wii is the best example. Armed at launch in 2006 with the twin killer apps of Wii Sports, which would go on to become the most popular retail game of all time, and Twilight Princess, a game with very high reviews that generally praised its unique controls.

Other examples, though more arguable, include:

  • The DS, which launched with Super Mario 64 DS, which is today the best selling handheld 3D platformer of all time, got good reviews at launch, showed off the DS's 3D prowess and touchscreen, etc.
  • The PSP, which launched with Lumines and Hot Shots Golf in Japan, and Ridge Racer worldwide. Hot Shots Golf was one of the few early PSP games that actually succeeded in Japan, Lumines was a highly rated exclusive suited for a handheld, and Ridge Racer was a pretty solid hit worldwide.
  • The 3DS launched with Nintendogs + cats. Now, that series has definitely dropped this generation, but over two and a half years later, it's still one of the top few best-selling 3DS games worldwide, and especially in Europe.
  • The Wii U is a bit weird. Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros U have sold very well for a game on a nearly failing system. They might not quite be killer apps, but without them, there would be virtually no Wii U's sold. So that at least makes them system sellers.

The 360, Vita, and PS3 admittedly lacked killer apps at launch, but having a killer app or at least a system seller at launch still seems to be the norm, if only because of new tech and awaited new entries in popular series.

In contrast, the PS4 apparently has virtually no high quality major exclusives at launch. A downloadable twin stick shooter is great, but I doubt that's what's moving hardware.

The Xbox One, much as I hate to say it, at least seems to offer more unique major games. Bleh. Seriously though, Dead Rising 3, Forza 5, and even Ryse all have the potential to be system sellers at le

The ONLY agame that really has potential to be a system seller out of the 3 you named is Forza to be honest. Ryse is a new unknown IP which could follow the same path as Knack did. ANd Dead Rising 3 is cupposedly having issues already even before launch that could hender it.

Now KZ:SF will still indeed be a system seller seeing as it has not "flopped" like the OP suggests. From actually reading the reviews almost ALL of them do nothing but praise the game so why they are stilling giving it such low scores is a mystery to me.

Then to top it off BOTHt he Xbox 1 and the PS4 have PLENTY of third party support at launch so they will both be fine if you ask me.

Does anyone else think it's time to give up on guerilla? I feel like they have 1 really great game (killzone 2) followed by a whole bunch of duds. They are SUPPOSED to be making Sony's flagship FPS, but so far I believe they have failed in that aspect.

Go back to insomniac for more resistance. Resistance 3 was my favorite FPS of the gen.

Wait what? Give up on then why? Other than KZ 1 ALL of their games have been basically triple A KZ 2 with a 91, KZ3 with an 84 and I forgot what KZ: Mercs got but it was up there as well. The games all looked and played very well. Just not like COD or BF or even Halo which for some reason made the scores lower. While I peersonally prefer the gameplay of the KZ series over all teh otehr mentioneted titles. I like the shooting, movement etc better. It is not as "easy" as all those other games are and that is a plus for me.

GG is doing great so they need to stick around and as far as Resostance goes yeah they can bring that back I loved Resistance 1 and 3!

Who's to say that FF would not have been as big if not bigger if they had stuck with Nintendo?

I know its a LOT of BOUGHT 3rd parties series that made sony what they are today, but maybe without FF moneyhatting, they may not have grown as much as they did.

They will always be mere "reality" stars to me.

It would not have magically become bigger without Sony's marketing and the fact that the PS brought gaming to more than just kids.

Considering when gaming became popular in the 80's, a lot of those kids (myself included) still play games to this day, typically of sony, they BOUGHT in to something at just the right time.

They have rabbit foot syndrome.

Look at it this way, before sony arrived gaming was getting more and MORE popular anyway (any arcade all over the world would be testiment to that)

3D gaming was about to boom anyway thanks to SEGA and the Virtua Fighter series.

Bottom line______________ is, sony get far more credit than they actually deserve, THEY GOT LUCKY.

Hence they are reality stars in my eyes, not A list celebrities like Atari, Nintendo, SEGA, Capcom, Namco, Konami, Taito and many more.

But outside of say NIN all of those "A list celebrities" that you mentioned WOULD NOT be the a list stars they are today without Sony. So they without a doubt get the credit that they deserve.

I don't know why but ti seems that you don't want to give them credit for some reason. And that is fine but don't act like they don't deserve it...that's just insane.

That's like me taking credit away from Nin because I am tired of Mario or Metroid or Zelda....that would be silly on my part. Can't look at it like that!

Don't forget that the PS1 only truly took off in 1997. And say what you want about the published/bought, etc but they played a big part in making FF the series it is today.

A series i don't give a toss about, as JRPG's are second only to RTS games in terms of my most disliked genre.

So thanks again sony.

JRPG's galore, Shenmue dies, and Yakuza is born.......... JUST FANTASTIC.

Did Jack Tretton burn your house down or something?
