Wrong, it was big in Japan, selling 2.62M (but Square charts show that that includes the PS1). FF6 only sold 860,000 in the west - as of the 31st of March 2003, which means that worldwide, it wasn't that big. |
Actually t-bone like Lawlight says, the only reason Final Fantasy VII got a worldwide release was because of Sony. FFVII was the first Final Fantasy game to even get released in Europe. (There were a pair of average spin off games but none of the main series).
Sony didn't get lucky, they were just very humble and worked very hard in the early days of the PS1. Final Fantasy VII was originally a Saturn title after Nintendo opted to stick with cartridge. However Sony offered to publish their games for them globally if they made it for the PS1. Sega offered no such thing and it's likely the games would have remained elusive to Europe.
They did similar with Namco, hence they published Ridge Racer/Tekken etc. Even though they were the underdog, the "extra services" they chucked in made it worthwhile for Namco "yeah we know you don't have a big Western Presence... we'll handle all that for you" is just too good to turn down. No Daytona/Sega Rally/Virtua Fighter to compete with like they would have had on the Saturn helped to tip things in Sony's favour too.
