Sony's PlayStation 4 has been tipped to outsell Xbox One by 11 million units over the next four years.
An IHS analyst believes that the PS4 will marginally outperform the Xbox One at launch, but will steadily pull away by the end of 2017.
IHS researcher Piers Harding-Rolls predicts that the Xbox One will sell 2.2 million units by the end of 2013, compared to the PS4's 2.4 million sales.
By the end of 2017, however, the PS4 is expected to sell 49 million units, compared to 38 million for the Xbox One.
While Harding-Rolls believes that the Xbox One will continue to outperform the PS4 in North America, Sony's global appeal will equate to more worldwide sales.
Both consoles are expected to benefit from poor Wii U sales.
"IHS expects existing geographical brand allegiance to continue with Xbox One outselling PS4 in North America, and PS4 outselling Xbox One across Europe combined," reads an IHS statement.
Read "IHS believes that Sony's wider geographical brand allegiance - especially across continental Europe and Japan - will be decisive in allowing PS4 to outsell Xbox One on a global basis by the end of 2017.
"We also believe that both Sony and Microsoft will continue to benefit from Nintendo's Wii U weak sales, with some past Wii users adopting the latest consoles instead of upgrading to Wii U."

When asked during a financials call on Tuesday whether Ubisoft was worried about Xbox One's commercial performance, Guillemot replied, "Even if the PS4 is in front of Xbox One pre-orders... so we are not worried at all. We think [Xbox One] will be a best-seller as well."
