48 was posted briefly yesterday and hint 47 wasn't posted but I'll post that game now.
47 - Hotline Miami
First time I ever saw this game and I just thought "what the hell is this piece of crap" and one day I saw it on a sale and I bought it just to see what people were screaming about. And, oh boy! This piece of crap turned out to be a piece of gold. It's a fantastic game where the gameplay has little to no faults.
I had very much enjoyment of it, but it fell short on soundtrack, where there was only a small portion which I liked and the plot was lackluster.
But, I have to say that if there is anything, then that would be that we need more games like these. Just pure gameplay madness and that is what I'm seeing from SM3DW right now and that's what you'll be seeing further down in my list.

Pros: It's a sequel to Metroid Prime (no spoilers are needed to say that's my number one this year as in prior years) and still kept up a lot of what made Metroid Prime so perfect, from the tone of the game to its beautiful worlds to an adventure-focused style of FPS combat Cons: Beam ammo and some bosses that made you want to rip your own head off (like the Boost Guardian, Spider Guardian, and phase 3 of the Emperor Ing). The difficulty spikes hurt its replay value, the odd choice of beam ammo (the first and only time in any Metroid game this was implemented) hurts technical score. Difficulty was remodeled somewhat in the Trilogy re-release, but i'm judging the original game here. |
I don't know, I thought the beam ammo system was a nice way to sort of "contain" you, as I never liked having to exercise self-control in the original Prime in order to get use out of all the beams after gaining the last one. (You get plasma beamed. And you get plasma beamed, and you get plasma beamed. Everybody gets plasma beamed!) Even though one of the things that I find most satisfying about Metroid games is taking a stroll across an area that gave you trouble earlier in the game, and utterly roflstomping everything in it with your overpowered equipment.
The Spider Guardian never really gave me trouble, to be honest, but the Boost Guardian was a motherfucker. I did only play the Trilogy version, though, and I hear both of them got nerfed pretty hard in that version. Is it true?
Also, hint for #46:
This game taught me that if I stick around for my friends when things look bad, they might just stop being assholes and randomly ditching me all the time.
#46 - Goldeneye 007 (N64)
I never got to play the game until a few years ago, and I was shocked at how well it held up. I kept hearing about how it aged poorly, but that's not 100% true. The controls take some adjustment, but they're rather fluid and they don't interfere with your chances at survival. Of course, this is largely due to the forgiving autoaim. The missions are still largely fun and the multiplayer (despite having rather basic-seeming maps) doesn't disappoint either. Honestly. I consider Goldeneye 007 to be more fun than most of the dual analog or PC-based shooters I've ever played. And that surprises me.

Pokemon Snap?

Yup!
Those poor Electrodes...
I'll admit, most of my Top 50 is a bit vanilla. #23 should be nice and controversial though.

It's a Pokémon game for sure. I'll go with Pokémon Black/White.

Korppi said: Well done. The amputee part refers to the fact that in order to avoid blood dropping from their brain to their legs as a consequence of intense g-force, the entirety of the Star Fox team had their legs amputated and replaced with metallic prostheses (as you can see here and here). Which is... rather macabre, and surprisingly bad-ass for someone like Slippy. Well, so much for today's lesson in completely useless video game trivia, everybody. For tomorrow's class, all of you will play at least ten hours of Dwarf Fortress. |
Mind is blown O.O.
How did I not see? I just figured from your hint, 'Wonder Red'... could be a soda. "Here, have some 'Wonder Red'."
