You could buy an adapter.

My original post is now the second most controversial thread on Reddit... ever.

Sony is apparently doing replacements for the entire controller, but if you have to send it in you won't be able to play your PS4 for up to a week. My goal is just to get some visibility so that they are forced to increase the quality of the rubber for future iterations.
What's the point of getting your controller replaced if it's just going to happen again in 1-2 weeks?

NeoGAF thread that originally followed the old thread. Around page 25+ you can see that others are claim to be having the same problem.

A user posted in my last thread claiming to be a DM for some company that dealt with either the distribution or development of the controllers. Obviously this is impossible to prove, but there seems to be sufficient evidence to back his story.

my ds4 that had the rubber wear also did have the r1 problem too i didnt know till i saw the utube vid and tried it. i ve seen and tried the fix which involves cleaning to my surprise sony have design the r1 and l1 buttons to ride/sit on to shafts after awhile the plastic to plastic contact causes small plastic dust which builds up on the shaft and in the hole of the button which then causes the button to stick.
the ps2 and 3 didnt have this design they simply floated freely and just had stops which would not let the button come out of the controller. the new design is good in that it will make the button feel more solid it wont feel loose and wiggle around like the ps1-3 but all ds4s r1 and l1 will need to be cleaned periodically

Had my ps4 since launch day. Ive been gaming more this last month than i have for the rest of the year (and i plated GoWA and TLoU) and my controllers are still like new. Doesnt even look like they have been taken out of the box
Basically hard skin, and rougher people will have more broken controllers. Also humidity, sweaty hands, and acidic hands will wear the rubber away really fast. Normal temperature, soft ish hands, and not sweaty should have no problems imo.

Why should he buy a faulty controller?

With PS2 and PS3, I always had a problem with the pads on top of the analog sticks. They would get loose and start to spin off my fingers, or come off completely. I complained on forums but found little support wherever I went.
I don't know what it is, but some of us just can't use Sony controllers.
