Forums - Microsoft - Penello On X1 DRM: “We Never Got A Chance To Have A Rational Conversation About What We Were Trying To Do"

A digital-focused future is where the video game industry is headed, gamers simply aren't ready to make the jump yet—that is, according to Microsoft's Albert Penello.

In an interview with Engadget, Penello lamented the rough reveal of Xbox One, telling the outlet, "I do feel like we never got a chance to have a rational conversation about what we were trying to do." While Xbox One's policies have changed dramatically since it was first revealed, Penello still sees the merit in the company's original vision.

"Sometimes the customer just says, 'No. I look at it this way, I'm done, I've made up my mind,'" he went on to add. "And we go, well, we've gotta fix it. It's not worth it. And that's where I think we were on the digital stuff. We'll get back to some of the cool stuff, and we have a lot of the cool stuff still in there."

Will we see Microsoft slowly morph Xbox One into the console it originally envisioned before all of the backlash? Who knows? Penello believes gamers' outlook will slowly change over time. "We just think that's the way the future's gonna go. We may have been right. What we were wrong about was that it's just too soon. People just weren't ready to make that leap right away."

Perhaps if the desire is there and gamers are willing to accept a Steam-like model on console, the Big M will make some changes down the line.

dat digital future....

Its pretty hard to have a reasonable conversation with someone when you start with (edited at someones advice) "do unpleasant things with a large part of our body and one of your body's cavities"

I am Torgo, I take care of the place while the master is away.

"Hes the clown that makes the dark side fun.. Torgo!"

Ha.. i won my bet, but i wasnt around to gloat because im on a better forum!  See ya guys on Viz

Who stopped them? Who was he expecting to have a conversation with anyway? A delegation of gamers?

Watching many of the videos that came out today about the Xbox One functionality solidified for me one thing. I will not by purchasing physical disks. Dont know why I didnt realize it before, but with how awesome the switching between apps and games that the Xbox One is it would really be disrupted by Xbox play Dead Rising 3 and instead of simply switching to Dead Rising 3 the Xbox One would stop and say "Insert Disc". So we are done with physical disks.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Not our problem MS had some of the shittiest PR i've ever seen at that time. It seemed to me that no one in xbox division had the same info as the next person. They were way to inconsistent. They are better now, but still need to work on their message better.

Oh, ... his comment is a bit weird considering that Dan Mattrick told us to just buy a 360 if we can´t dealt with it.

...there really is no reason why they couldn´t "get back to some of the cool stuff" (I think they are talking about the game sharing stuff that supposedly wasn´t anything more than a glorified 1 hour demo) with your digital purchases.

i don't feel like they ever attempted the conversation.

the rumor broke about the 24 hour check and they then said it's no big deal (#dealwithit). then they changed (180). if there was a benefit to consumers they didn't once take the effort to explain why i should want that future...

disc swapping is a part of the ownership feeling and if anything, thats what gets a gamer of his/her ass once every 5 hours.
