I'm really, really glad I never got into the whole achievement collection thingy, otherwise I'd probably prefer The Conduit over Knights of the Old Republic and that would suck balls. Well, on the other hand I did waste my time on getting 15 researchers in a single level in A Game of Dwarves so I guess I'm in the risk zone.

But I do find the achievement system interesting. It's apparent that achievements that doesn't get added to a global achievement system are totally worthless. The far majority of games have achievements in one way or the other, like getting all the stars in Mario or Sonic, beating Metroid in under 3hours or defeating Nemesis in Final Fantasy X. But those achievements, and to some extent Steam achievements, really don't count because there's no way to add them all up and show off to friends and foes. Even if getting these achievements mean unlocking content in the game they're still very much inferior.
So one can only assume that it's really not about the achievements themselves but showing them to people in an easy way. It's about bragging rights. And I guess that's why the lack of a "true" achievement system on Nintendo/pre 7th gen systems and to a lesser extent Steam doesn't bother me personally because I don't value such a feature. I do like collecting all the coins in Mario and getting all the heart-pieces in Zelda but I don't worry about whether or not other people can see it. And if I did want to show off I could just post a screenshot on Miiverse or something...

How do we know that's not photoshopped? Only a certified trophy is incontravertable *proof* of your gaming skill.

Well how do we know that the account owner got the trophy by himself? He could've had somebody else do the work for him. And hackers might be able to "adjust" the score a bit. We can't be sure!

And that's why the Xbone is the obvious choice for hardcore gamers this gen: the Kinect records the player during the achievement achieving process to avoid frauds. If cheating is detected it dumps all of those naked pictures it secretly collects all over the internet.

So is a dick contest?

And yes.

I wonder why you even got a Wii U in the first place.

I don't have a Wii U.

Nintendo builds their own "trophy" type system into all their games. It is called unlockables like unlocking extra characters and karts otherwise known as paid DLC to other companies.  Animal Crossing: New Leaf has a badge system.  In Mario Kart you try and get 3 stars on all the circuits (which helps unlocks characters, karts, etc).  NSMB you try and collect all the stars which helps unlock bonus stages.  Smash has trophies.

I believe it is more important for you to "brag" to others about how many points or trophies you have.  Am I guilty of going for stupid achievements?  Sure...  I played all the civilizations in Civ 5 on Steam just to get the stupid achievement.  I would have done it eventually anyways but it helped me keep track of who I've played with and who I haven't.  Beat all the difficulity levels on Civ5 but I would have done that anyways.  Did the same bullshit with WoW a few years back.  At the end of the day I don't give a shit how many achievements I've accumulated.  I just care about enjoying the game and getting the most out of it.  I don't need to be told to do stupid tasks just to get some achievement.

I don't have a Wii U.

I was talking to the OP, if that is not obvious from the reply.

Since you quoted two people I thought the second part was a full reply to me. You should add "OT" next time

But you two were also quoted for being OT

Point taken though.

Xbox fan here

I don't care about achievements, at all. So the argument is beyond flawed imo.

I don't want trophies/achievements, they're a distracting, worthless gimmick.

So you hated them in Xenoblade Chronicles and Super Smash Bros. Brawl?

Not buying games because achievements is like paying a hooker to hug her in a friendly manner. There's nothing wrong with it and I respect it, but damn you're missing the point.

LOL, excellent metaphor.

The only thing cool about trophies in Smash is that they give a history lesson.
