Forums - Sony - Shuhei Yoshida Confirms That Upscaler On PlayStation 4 Is Hardware Based

Does it bring better results? Or is it that it just doesn't burden the CPU, allowing it work on its maximum potential?

Depends of the algorithm used... via software you can change that but via hardware you have some prefixed algorithms... hardware is way way way faster than software... so the result is better not because it is better but because you use a faster algorithm via software to use low CPU and that faster algorithm is a crap.

You can have the same result via software but you will use a lot of CPU.

Ignoring the resolution and the sharper look, XOne textures have as much details as PC's. But PS4's loose details. it does.

That is a baseless myth. You CAN'T igonre one or the other. It comes from various screenshot comparisons where people counted "stones on the floor" and "more grass structure", and saw "more stones in the XBox image than on the PS4 image". This actually is a simple result of how the "boring stuff" is structured in the game. BF4 uses a randomiser to pattern "boring parts", so sometimes you see more stones/grass, sometimes you see less stones/grass. The second reason is the excessive sharpening and contrast settings the XBox One uses to offset lower resolution. This introduces noise in the texture structures that some people see as "there is more in the textures than on PS4" - in reality it is just artificial noise introduction.

I am talking about individual textures (of one guy's head), not objects like grass or stones.  As far As I know, textures of guy's heads are not procedurally generated in this game. When DF talked about details, they are talking about details in textures, not number of objects, at least in their context.

And if I ignore sharpening and contrasting, XOne textures (at least some) have (approx) the same details as PC's (appears same resolution asset), as it should be for middle assets on slightly same resolutions even with some upscaling. Of course if you find a Very High res texture on PC BF4 version it would appear blurried on XOne but it is not the case, not on materials seen by me on Internet.

I know that most people don't want to hear what some people and me (not XOne fans) are saying but it is really subtle. DF noticed it, some guys (not counting XOne fanboys) at NeoGaf/beyond3D/VGchartz have noticed it. We won't bury our head in the sand. Now that we know that PS4 is stronger than XOne let's talk constructively about this (blurred) reality.

Thanks ethomaz, I understand now.

The guy head is a good example of your confusion... that NOT how PC looks... neither Xbone... you think there is more detail but theare aren't.

See how DF fucked the image.

See how DF fucked the image.

FIrst, hard to notice subtle details on whole big screenshots.  And we should focus on PS4 vs PC. We don't want to care about 720p upscaled XOne image anyway, too much jaggies on those...(And on the videos the jaggies are worse because of the sharpening effect).

Secondly, you should use the DF tool to isolate part of guy's head. Zoomed in, you'll see better the lack of details PS4's vs PC as if the texture was either low res or blurried VS PC's. But now compare PC vs XOne, the texture (ignoring sharpening) have the same amount of details (as if same res textures as it is probably the case).

Try the DF tool with the second image, the chopter on the roof focusing here the details (the many shaders) of the ground. Same problem. Xone have as much details as PC's (ignoring sharpening) but PS4's is shamefully blurred. It is very obvious in this one when you search for it and it occus with shaders, not textures.

Once you notice the really subtle blur, impossible to ignore it (so maybe it is best that you first choose not to search for it). With the DF tool you can now see the (additionnal) blur occurs in every part of the whole screenshot and in every available screenshots. The problem occurs (more or less clearly) in every comparisons (PC vs PS4) I have yet watched. It occurs not only for textures but shaders and the whole image. It is not a resolution difference of textures and anyway XOne texture assets are the same as PC's, it should be the same for PS4.

You are making the same mistake... forget the DF pictures exists... there are bullshots. DF picutures are wrong... that the point everybody here is trying to say to you... neither version looks like these pictures.

The PC and PS4 details are the same like pointed all the face off except DF.

And you are not correctly reading my posts nor correctly searching for the anomaly.

Even if DF intentionnaly blurred the PS4 images and videos (which I don't believe, they NEVER cheated on such level in the past, I mean they would get easily caught if they blur materials), I can see the additionnal anormal blur effect in every PC vs PS4 comparisons videos on OTHERS websites (IGN, Jackfrags but on others comparisons also).

I am talking about PC vs PS4 here. The whole "XOne: sharpening/contrasting/DF balanced conspiration/special_sauce_upscaler" is out of the picture.
