Nintendo has been the most profitable console manufacturer in the for the last 10+ years by far.  They don't sell their consoles for a loss or make money from subscriptions.  They do profit from games and, at least with the Wii, accessories.  While we don't know how sustainable that approach will be going forward, it certainly has set enough of a precedent that both MS and Sony have changed course from the loss-leader console launches that Sony built it's gaming empire on in the past.  Selling at a profit initially appeases the most important customers of all:  stockholders.
