You are contradicting yourself: Of course the history is completely irrelevant when looking at the profitability of a brand

they have had 6 straight years of profit [...] The trend is actually really positive at the moment.

To have a trend you need to have a history - so it ISN'T irrelevent to look at MS's history in console gaming. The history is PART of the trend going forward. Yes, Xbox is making money now, but from what I've seen the brand as a whole has lost more money than its made, and that's something to remember because it's important for the brand to generate money from the get go with the Xbone - MS has said so themselves.

Investors won't be interested in Xbox if it doesn't recover the losses sustained from the past 12 years. True, they're having a positive trend earning tons of cash, but that's also a trend they have to keep alive.

Investors look forward not backwards. Investors dont give a rats ass about how the Xbox lost money pre FY2008.  That is over. They care about forward thinking statements.

And another thing the other stuff in the same division that was profitable was dwarfed by things that werent. Not to mention that the Mac and Office software that was include was just stuff sold at retailers (aka Best Buy, etc.) not license sales.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

I said the PS2 won because of games. But do you remember the first year it had? Was kinda shitty.
In comparison. But it got the momentum. It got in peoples house., people bought the system. It got games. Over and done, boom market leader.

Sony has no media format or center to utilize here. A chromecast can do more than it can do media wise.

Do you know why Sony's handheld strategy sucks? Because its a console strategy for a handheld. Its a very multimedia centric device with few "system defining" games and million sellers.Half of its purpose is made defunct by phones. Also memory cards.  Interestingly Sony software did terrible on the PSP, but they have a much higher attache rate on the Vita)

Do you know why I said Nintendo will be fine? Because they always give the consumer what they didnt know they wanted.

Do you know how to use the "quote" button ? (Your driving me insane for me trying to respond to you.)

I agree with your reason of why sony's handheld sucks and that's because sony can not compete with nintendo in that segment and what you said about their games is true. Sony needs a blue ocean strategy for that type of market because they can't just depend on the brand itself to sell.

No, Nintendo doesn't always give what the consumer wants. They gave us a successor to a gamecube instead of a wii. The wii u is not similar at all in any respects to the wii. The wii u is competing with the PS4 and the xbone directly! What nintendo didn't realize is that they were doing a red ocean not a blue ocean and therefore nintendo (the minnow) is left to compete with the xbone (the shark) and the PS4 (the giant man eating squid).

ok, I'm going to bed after this so I will let you have the last word after this.

You seem to be comparing the x1 to the ps3, I'm comparing the x1 to the 360.  So what makes me think that the x1 will sell better under current conditions?

http://www.vgchartz.com/article/251152/xbox-one-preorders-ahead-of-xbox-360-at-same-time-period/

So, you don't think that xbox is a more established brand now with more established franchises than when the 360 came out?  growing from hardware that sold 25 million to over 80 million hasn't established the brand more versus then?  Microsoft doesn't have established franchises like halo, gears, crackdown, etc? How can the market disagree with a grown userbase and an increased amount of owned franchise ip's?   How can you say that is my opinion and not fact?

As for your last paragraph, I never claimed that the x1 would be disruptive, but that it is probably the most disruptive of the three (basically that none of them are that disruptive).  Microsoft bundeling kinect with every x1 will probably help quite a bit with the software attach ratio you mention.  Also, who says next gen will retract?  you?  I haven't seen any reputable analysts say anything of the sort.

Did you mean more established than sony or nintendo cause that's how I interpreted it. BTW just because it has higher preorders than the xbox 360 doesn't mean that it will sell better than the xbox 360. The xbone isn't disruptive at all and that's because because microsoft hasn't committed to making any relevant games for the kinect 2. In fact I think it will become just as worthless as the wii u gamepad because after all if it has no software to support it's worth then it might as well not be there. I better be seeing the kinect only games selling well otherwise it will have not improved on the software attach ratio. The fact that the matter is none of the consoles are disruptive to the point that the market will grow and instead will have lost the audience because consumers from the wii will have being lost.

I don't see how you would have interpreted it as against sony or nintendo as I have been comparing the X1 to the 360 the whole time, but whatever.  I agree that higher preorders does not necessarily mean that it will sell better in the long run, but it is also the only data we actually have to look at right now.  You are saying that it looks like the X1 won't sell nearly as much as the 360, but you don't have anything to base that on other than your thoughts of the price point being too high and the economy being bad.  Never mind the fact that the economy is actually doing just fine right now and the last generation suffered through one of the worst recessions ever and still managed to move the most hardware of any generation.

Basically, I'm supporting my views with the only data available, you are supporting your views with conjecture.

@Bold Hahahahaha. That was hilarious, you said the economy was doing good ?  Last generation had a recession ? (Are you serious ? I think your in la la land LOL.)

The only thing preorders prove is that the hardcore fanbase has grown not what the general consumer wants. You can keep saying my analysis stinks but $500 in this economy while not differentiating itself from it's competitors sounds like a disaster for recipe and I don't care what anyone else says.

Nonsense. 360 is not in 3rd place, that is a lie. It has outsold Ps3 worldwide (it was only Sony combining shipments with PS2 that allowed the lie that PS3 went ahead to gain traction).

Even if it was, who cares? the difference is like 1% vs PS3 either way. If one sold 80m and the other 81m, who cares? It's a tie.

Also he notes MS lost billions on 2001 Xbox, but doesn't note Sony lost billions on PS3 while 360 was very profitable?

Handhelds are a stupid place to compete anyway. They are a money loser and smartphones are killing them. 3DS and Vita sell like crap outside Japan. Why give a company kudos for indulging in a losing market? Microsoft is wise to stay out of handhelds, not stupid.

I am sorry for this guy that Nintendo cant compete, which is proven by the incredibly poor Wii U sales figures.

Really?  you don't think a recession happened durring the last generation of game consoles?  Do you not remember 2008-09?  Do I actually need to give you links that talk about a recession?  Do you not remember the Eurozone almost collapsing because of Greece?  And you are mocking me?

As far as the current economy, I said it is doing fine, and it is.

http://www.businessinsider.com/the-state-of-the-world-economy-2013-9

The us stock market is at its highest levels, housing market is rebounding, Europe is rebounding, China is still growing.  The world economy has essentially recovered at this point and is currently on a upward trajectory.  Still fragile maybe, which is why I say it is doing fine and not good or great, but it certainly isn't some terrible economy like you are trying to say it is.

I thought you meant 6th generation ?

"The Game Industry assumed Wii would sell like how the Wii U is selling today. When Wii shot off, people were looking for answers as to ‘how?’ or ‘why?’ which is how this site became well known. If I had discussion with people who weren’t using the business gavel, it would be like food having discussion with poison. Who wins in such combination? The poison. This is why the game forums ended up being wrong as well."

"There is not enough business minded people in society to have discussions. Most people don’t want to discuss the business, they just want to talk about the games."

For me, that was the most interesting part of all the article

It's true though, alot of the gaming forums have no sense of what business means. Their job is supposed to be about the games not sales.

By the way... that site has a number of very, very, very interesting articles. People should check it out
