Forums - Gaming Discussion - Symmetric VS. Asymmetric Sticks: the final battle

The position of the analog sticks doesnt matter to me. What matters is the position of the D-pad, size and correct input registration. Analogs are easy aslong as theres one in the left and another one in the right.
From the D-pad perspective the Dual Shock has it right. The D-pad on the Xbox is small and terrible. With that said, the D-pad on my dual shock  3 is terrible aswell, even if the position and size seem correct. It doesnt register as it should. I hope that Dual shock 4 has a D-pad as good as the ones in the dual shock 1 and 2. I think it might be related to the material and hardness of the buttons.

Its not easy making a good D-pad. SEGA just made it look easy during the mega drive and saturn days.

No im not.  If you are judging something without even using it it really shows your stance on things.  I for one will be waiting to actually use both PS4 and XBO controllers before making a decision.

As for this debate i personally find it dumb since it comes down to how comftorable the controller is.  You wanna know why I and many other people dont like the PS3 controler?  BEcause it fills cramped, the thumb sticks hav no indents, and the triggers are meh.  If they made the stick asymmetical it wouldnt have felt so cramped.

PS4 controller def looks like a step up and looks more similar to the X360 controller.    And the sticks dont seem so close this time(Or im hoping not at least)But on paper Im still liking the XBO because of impulse triggers and once again the thumb sticks material looks to be of better quality.  Until i see how comftoarable both are I cant make a decision though.

Was expecting this. So the 100s of journalists and industry professionals that have used it and showered it with praise are lying? I don't need to use it myself to hear what other people think of it, you were referring to other people's opinions, not our own.

A lot of people dislike the PS3 controller because they are either used to the 360 controller or they find it too small, it has nothing to do with the analogue placement.

Go ahead and post all 100 if you want xD

And really people have been doing the same with XBO controller.  People also did it with 3DS, Vita, and WiiU gamepad as well.  It is a common thing for people to review things that are unreleased since it garners attention.  People just say if they liked it or not and people are liking PS4 and XBO controller right now.  I dont see 100s and 100s of people saying that either is the best ever though. They just say they like them and move on.

JayWood2010: asymmetrical, the correct way

No.  Neither is correct.  Just need to space them farther apart giving you a less cramped feeling which is really more for comfort of the overall design.  The best way to do that to me seems to be asymetrical but symetrical can do it as well with controllers like WiiU gamepad and Pro controller.

Fixed

It actually doesn't matter to me. None is better than the other imo.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Asymmetrical because dominant buttons and analog sticks should be placed higher on the controller.

Also, OP, you need to make a table to split out the two sides. It is incredibly difficult to read the difference between "symmetrical" and "asymmetrical" in a big list like that.

Both.

Yeah in a fixed camera game like god of war, but in pretty much every game I play I keep my thumbs on both analog sticks(dualshock).  Not too many games I play have a fixed camera.

Yeah the thing is the lack of having to over extend your thumbs in an awkward position.

Consider this for a minute. When you hold out your hands in front of you as if you were grasping something, your thumbs naturally point upwards (towards the top of a controller). When holding a DS controller, however, your thumbs are slanted to the left and curled in an awkward and uncomfortable way. The only reason the right thumstick stays down when the left one stays up is because buttons are used and are more dominant on the right side, where as the d-bad is usually secondary on to the thumstick on the left.

for now ill go with symmetrical. while asymmetrical is good for fps, tps and racing games, its quite horrible for hack and slash games and others types of genre's. symmetrical is good for for any type of game. personally i prefer symmetrical much more, could change my mind in the future

I prefer symmetrical, but I think it's mainly a question of habits. You'll get used to both over time.
