Ahead of the next-generation console wars, a leading retailer has predicted that the Xbox One will be more popular than the PS4.

With both Sony and Microsoft set to launch new gaming devices within the space of a week of each other next month, retailer John Lewis has suggested that the Xbox One could surprise many and lead the way.

The retailer’s predictions go against the grain, with many reports and industry analysts suggesting that the PS4 is on track to steal an early advantage, with the Sony branded console said to have achieved higher pre-order interest thanks to its improved spec and lower price tag.

“We are expecting more interest in the Xbox One,” Jonathan Marsh, a Head Technology Buyer at John Lewis said speaking with TrustedReviews ahead of the two consoles’ releases.

“We are stocking both the PS4 and the Xbox One but if we were to back one, we are thinking that Xbox One will appeal a bit more to our customers in terms of the experience it creates.” He added: “If we had to edge one I would favour the Xbox One.”

Suggesting that the company has already seen a lot of consumer interest in both consoles, Marsh added that he believed the Xbox One could gain an advantage through its popular software and online platform.

“The software that the Xbox One launches with will really appeal to our customer base based on what we’ve experienced in the past,” he said.

Although John Lewis looks set to back the Xbox One, reports earlier this week have claimed that PS4 pre-orders have already topped the 1.5 million units milestone, with a raft of retailers having the PS3 follow-on atop their pre-order interest lists.

With the Xbox One release date having been confirmed for November 22 in the UK, the Microsoft branded console will hit retailers seven days ahead of its leading rival. Although the PS4 will land in the US on November 15, a UK PS4 release date has been set for November 29.

Although Microsoft will beat Sony to market, the Xbox One will be the considerably more expensive of the two next-gen consoles. While an Xbox One price has been set at £429, the PS4 price is £80 cheaper at £349.

I find this interesting simply because it's one of the first reports I've personally seen saying that they're expecting Xbox One to be more popular.

For reference, John Lewis is a fairly-upmarket department store. I think they've got quite a few stores across the UK. With that said, and not to rain on this article, but I honestly had no idea they sold videogames or consoles until now. I knew they sold TV's and iPads and stuff, but not games.

So it kinda figures that the type of people who do shop in their stores may be more interested in the more-expensively-priced Xbox.

John Lewis market share in the console sales is simply irrelevant. Nobody shops there for technology, appart from soccor mums and wags.

John Lewis? Not exactly the expert on the video game market as their video game section is rather small (nigh on non existent in my local store). I do however value them as a amazing retailer. Their view here though is odd unless for some reason they have more Xbox One preorders than PS4.

£425 last gen was a PS3 killer, far too expensive. Sure inflation has increased but when it lowered to £325/£300 it started selling. £429 is still too expensive, while £350 is nothing to shout about, that extra £80 is appealing when having to buy a game with the console.

People shop at John Lewis for TVs, they have a price matching service, which means you can get the TV you want, at the price you want with a 5 year warrentee.

so that explains it.

1) this isn't a technology store so his vantage is vastly different from the rest of the industry.

2) upmarket store serve wealthy clients where that $100 difference won't be so impactful.   ..and we all know that the $100 price difference is really the only differentiator in these systems.

John Lewis is a pretty big retailer, but it's more a like Bloomingdale's/Ikea combo than something with a known electronics focus like Sears.

In my experience living in the UK, most gamers get their stuff in GAME or in the large Wal-mart type supermarkets like Sainsbury's or Asda, or even order online. I've never heard of anyone buying a game or console at a John Lewis. But it must be a popular place for parents to pick up a system for their kids.
