Forums - Nintendo - Watch Dogs team is “Optimizing the Controls for the Beast that is the Wii U Gamepad”

The Wii U version of Watch Dogs will look noticeably better than the current-gen versions, according to one of the game's senior developers.

During an interview with CVG, creative director Jonathan Morin was asked how the Wii U version compared visually to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.

"I would say the Wii U version is pretty much in between what the current gen is and what the next gen is from a version standpoint," Morin replied.

"It's hard to position it. I would tend to say it's maybe a bit closer to current gen than next gen for certain things but it's a beautiful game on Wii U and it's cool to play it just on the GamePad."

Morin also confirmed that Watch Dogs could be played on the Wii U GamePad in off-screen mode.

"There are no new features or anything like that - it's the same game but we're optimising the controls for the beast that is the Wii U GamePad," he said.

Ubisoft has confirmed a Watch Dogs release date of November 19 in North America and November 22 in Europe for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC. PS4 and Xbox One versions will be available when the console's launch.

In the full CVG interview, Morin discusses the competition from Rockstar, as well as the backlash from an unfinished promotional video, along with the game's underlying themes.

I've heard this song and dance before. I'll believe it when I see it.

Despite all the promotional business, we have yet to see any build other than the PC build, right? There was that released shot of the PS3/360 version that looked very unfinished indeed

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Short video of PS360. They have shown the PS4 build, but only on PCs or dev kits... It's not very clear, I think the next-gen versions of the game will look good, but I am less convinced how much effort has gone into the old versions

I'm definetly getting this on the Wii U because I think it makes sense with those controls; too bad this is going to sell terrible on the U.

i really hope these optimizations turn out to be worth it.

Some people just won't be sold on the Wii U controller but the thing really is impressive. I've been playing Wind Waker HD with the new controls since Friday and it just works. It may end up as one of my all time favorites as more and more uses for the thing appear. Glad to see a third party developer taking development for it seriously.

Just do with Watch Dogs what you did with ZombiU, Ubisoft.

ZombiU made excellent use of the Gamepad. Watch Dogs, with all that hacking-centric gameplay and extensive use of maps and simultaneous use of different characters in differents spots would be amazing to be played with the Gamepad, IF did the right way.

They're saying they are.... But from what I know, they did a good job with ZombiU (that was them right?). This game has cost them so much they need to sell it to everyone they can

I want to believe this but I'll wait and see, Ill only support games with a Most Wanted (PC Textures, revamped lighting) level of polish on the Wii U, gamepad and off-screen alone is not enough. I didn't notice how bad/non-existent ZombiUs textures were on my 22 (bedroom) but on the 38 (living room) I was like "Daaaaamn" and not in a good way.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine
