Forums - Gaming - Women In Gaming - A very revealing podcast.

The figurine part was in the podcast, I didn't know for sure but I wouldn't have been surprised.

I may have said that in an incorrect way in regards to cosplay. I was simply trying to state that Kojima making Quiet look the way she does simply for the reason to have girls cosplay as her and look "erotic" is wrong. People cosplay as Meryl, and Sniper Wolf, and The Boss no problem and they (mostly) didn't have any overly ridiculous clothing.

If people want to cosplay they'll do it because they like the character. That's all the motivation they need, they want to look like their favorite character or the character they think is totally awesome. If you make a good character they'll cosplay as them, that's my understanding of it. But for Kojima to make Quiet the way he did to inspire girls to dress like her is wrong in my opinion. Make a great character Kojima, that's all you need to do.

In case you didn't know, I have a comic book called Guardians. I'm the writer/creator of it, and we have four issues out right now, with our fifth coming out soon!

I really liked Ashley's design in ME3. (as well as Jack's, Miranda's and Samara's in ME2)

Hey I like cleavage and ass shots as much as the next guy, and I won't apologize for that. What I do kinda have a problem with is when it's waay overdone like EDI in ME3 (Bioware poked fun at it when Javik commented on it) and Quiet's design in MGSV.

In Quiet's case, she can't talk because presumably her tongue's been cut out, so basically the only reason she exists in the game is to be gawked at in her ridiculous outfit. I really hope he reconsiders her design before the game comes out.

Yeah, for the record I liked how Ashley looked in ME3. She looked amazing in that blue armor. But when I heard the podcast and the developers said that they intentionally "spruced her up" that made me feel sad. They didn't do it for characters sake they did it for the gamers sake.

I too hope Kojima rethinks Quiet. Doubt it though.

Have you played any game by Kojima by any chance? specifically MGS 2?

I have played Metals Gear Solid, Sons of Liberty, and Snake Eater.

Wow. That's a lot of hate, and a lot of junk.

You really think that guys don't complain about some roles in movies or TV? It happens all the time, but it's ignored because of all the action movies and adventure movies they star in that its considered a small minority. What's happening with women in gaming is has been happening for years and shown signs of stopping.

Can you explain what Kojima did? Or what the ME crew did to Ashley? Or how in the focus group (first topic in the podcast) the girls from ages 11-17 made all social games, many of them about looks and appearances? True some of it is about society but games aren't helping.

And it's not just about the women, it's about men too, they talk about that in the podcast. How its insulting to some men (including two of the hosts) that they do these things. And I agree with them.

Oh and as for your "same apples in different pies" comment? Really? Good luck with that.

Yeah, really.

The point is.. "omg omg we're being sexualized in games blah blah blah", and so freaking what?

What's the endgame here? Nothing. "oh we just want to feel self-entitled and special". That's all this is, isn't it?

Ok, time to move on.

Wow...again.

I get that you don't care. That's fine. But some people do. A lot of people do. In an age where we are trying to be more conscious about what we say it's time to be more conscious about what do and show.

The whole industry isn't guilty of this, they say that in the podcast, it's just there are characters and franchises that do things that honestly aren't right. They do controversial things to try and ensure their games will sell better instead of just making the game better.

It's not about being "self-entitled" or "special" it has to do with equality. About being treated fairly and being represented in a positive way.

I will not "move on" because I believe this needs to change, other people believe that way too. And if we "move on" then they'll keep on doing this, and that's wrong.

Ok, if you really feel like this is about equality, then why not start acting like an equal then? If women want to be treated as equals, they should stop whining about every little thing that doesn't really matter. I mean, so what if the fans of Tifa want her to have huge breasts? If you don't like it, then don't play it. It's not complicated.

It's similar to how men don't want to watch very feminine movies or very feminine music groups. We don't bother with it because we feel that women are entitled to like what they want to like. Again, if women want to be treated equally, then they should allow men to like what they want to like. Kojima is a freaking man, he's the freaking producer of MGS5, he's the freaking creator of the series, so if he wants freaking big breasts on the heroine, then he can get big ass breasts as big as Mount Everest if he wants.

On the other hand, you get a female game producer, director, whatever, and she wants the male hero to act like Robert Pattinson in Twilight, all unrealistically stupidly romantic and saying all sorts of stupid shit, GO AHEAD. Men aren't up in arms about how stupid that would be, and we would just let women play it and enjoy it.

That's equal isn't it? Equality is a double-edged sword. You can't ask for it without getting the consequences. You can't act like a super-vocal minority and expect the entire gaming industry to bow down to you.

Did you watch the Ms. World event recently in Indonesia? A very vocal minority of conservative Muslims thought they were self-entitled enough to force the cancelation of the event, and organizers had to move it to Bali and remove the swimsuit competition. That's stupid and the gaming industry cannot bow to the whims of a select few.

If MALE devs want their games to be sold to primarily MALES, in a MALE dominated action/fps/adventure/etc. genre market, then they CAN and SHOULD make female characters sexy.

Wow...the third.

I'm almost speechless, the amount of stupidity there was amazing. Now to be fair, you did make some good points. Kojima is the creator of MGS, and he has the right to make whoever he wants. And every single creator has the right to make whatever story, character, plot they want. BUT that doesn't mean WE, and by WE I mean the people who will buy these games, have to like it. We're the consumers, we make the games successes or failures, that's on us.

You're the second person to mention movies, I've already talked about one point you made so I'll go straight to the other. Who says we aren't up in arms about stupid stuff like that? Plenty of guys hate Twilight and that it made so much money and that it made girls slightly delusional in how they think romance should be. Not all, but a lot, I knew one person who took it way to far so I know it happened.

You keep saying we're few, we're not. It's not a minority thing. This isn't the only forum that talks about it. Or one country, or one race, it's all over.

And we're not trying to make the game industry "bow to our will" we know we can't do that, but can tell them how we feel and hope to broaden their perspective beyond sales figures and quarter goals. That's all we're doing. We're trying to show that there is a better way, a simpler way, and all it requires is a little tact.

Oh and as for your final comment. about how gaming is "male dominated" look up the numbers, female gamers across all genres is growing, they say it in the podcast even, female gamers play ALL games across ALL genres. That's the reason their can't truly be a "game for guys" or a "game for girls" because somewhere out there someone will tip toe to the other side to what the game is like.

Assassins Creed, Halo, Tomb Raider, Call of Duty, and on and on. No one genre is dominated by anyone anymore. We all play. That's why we're called gamers. Its non-gender specific.

GROWING does not mean GROWN. When female gamers and developers start overtaking the number of men in the market, talk to me again.

Meanwhile, as a member of the CURRENT dominant market, I will continue to admire sexy designs on female characters because that's what I enjoy. If you really believe your little crusade, then go ahead and whine but nothing will change the market unless the devs become more predominantly female. Guess what? The biggest games are STILL predominantly made by males. There's nothing you can do about that.

And despite the claim of females playing as much as males, I can take that and shove it. That is not true, and you know it. So you're gonna say that women spend as much time on COD as men? Im-freaking-possible. MAYBE the trend will reverse itself in the future. But not now. So while women are STILL the minority, then they can't say shit about the system.

Don't say that there's an equal share just because women play a certain genre. If you want to be heard, then you ought to be a major player in the industry. Sadly, women aren't. Not Yet. Talk to me again when this fact has changed. Until then, women will be sexualized because that's where the game market is, and men will be turned into pussies in the movie industry because that's where the market is. It's balanced. Equal. Just like you like it.
