What I took from this is that they felt using ESRAM was a more energy and cost efficient approach to GDDR5.

Unfortunately most people still think that powerof(8G fast ddr3 + fast esram) < powerof(8G low power gdd5). In truth it is exactly the opposite.
MS was simply caught offguard by the 8G gddr5 being available in 2013. They bet on gddr5 being too low capacity in 2013/14 and went ddr3 since they always planned with 8G (SOny planned with 4G).

Why do these technical articles always have to be a wall of text?

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

If they went with 14 CU's wouldn't that have a bad impact on yields? Surely that wasn't really a viable option...

Dose it mean Xbox one is better than ps4 ?

Yes and No!

According to MS employees its Yes!

Rest of the world its a NO!

Though interesting, there's lot of spining in that article. Can't blame MS for that honestly, what they're gonna say anyway - "yes, PS4 is superior"? (audio DSP is nice touch though, it will offload EQ/Dyn/Reverb off the CPU)

However, I have no words to describe Leadbetter, he's behaving last few months as a paid shill, conveniently "forgetting" about PS4's double the number of ROPs and 50% more TMUs, in addition to all other enhancements. He has become real embarrassment for EG.

damn people you really need to read or at least try to understand. PS4 IS MORE POWERFUL, we all know that and most of us never really question that part. the question is can an inferior spec sheet "on paper" can be as good as the other one more powerful, with better design and custom tweaks in real life. the answer is yes!!! Now, don't get me wrong, the PS4 will still probably end up having a slight advantage in the end but this will be way less noticeable than what the specs on paper make it out to be. I have always said a 50% more power on raw spec almost never translates into 50% better performance.

now that said you have to take into consideration what you want from your box, specs and design are far from the full story.
-What game do you want to play
-what pad you prefer (I know my hands are physically allergic to the DS format, so just that is a big point in my decision),
-do you have a use for an IR blaster (many device and many remotes you wish you could do without during gaming or even for your family that is not especially tech friendly),
- do you have a use for Kinect (do you like to have fun beside seating down, or in groups of friends, do you like fitness, dance games or out of the usual pad games, are you scared or not by it, do you have high enough self-esteem to not feel silly when talking to it and see how it can help you navigate way more naturally and faster than using the old pad ways)
-are you interested by the AV pass through (because you like to be able to switch, fast and seamlessly between TV and gaming when there is a commercial break or during wait time in MP game lobbies)
-are you interested by multi tasking capabilities or do just one thing with a console and game
-are you interested by the online current capabilities and especially the future of it that will ever get greater with time
-and finally do you like the idea that in the future your game/apps might be cross compatible across all there OSs to some extend or in some way....

all that should make you decide what platform is more suited for your needs than just raw spec which at the end will barely add anything to what you actually do and need with a console....
well at least it's my take on it

Except you posted a one sided arguement!

PS4 has voice/facial recognition. Gesture control etc etc.

Problem with AV pass through is you gotta leave both devices on which IMO is stupid and a waste of electricity. So in reality you still gotta have a Sky box to watch Sky on your X180 which completely defeats the purpose of having one box.

I'm sure the PS4 can do multi tasking too.Or did you miss that bit out on purpose?

Do you have remote play on X180?

It looks like Cerny did his research, and bet on GDDR5. He also had the forsight to see more GPGPU use in the future. The PS4 is built primarily for gaming and media functions second. X180 is media first and gaming second.

Good, good.... they testes 14CUs with the same ROPs/TMUs and of course get a worst increase in performance than upping 6% the clock.

Now try to use the same 14CUs with more ROPs/TMUs units... you know there are a bottleneck here... increasing the clock increase the ROPs/TMUs  performance too... so clock is a better choice here.

eSRAM yet makes no sense but it is not a big deal.

And the redundants CUs shows how bad they are in production yields.

PS. It's good to know the DevKits are running with 14CUs... that's can explain why the games at E3 were better than the Gamescom and after.

still nothing about cloud and untapped potential i find these guys very mis informing people for such an "important issue"

That's a fact.

The MS best scenario was 8GB DDR3 + 32MB eSRAM vs. 4GB GDDR5.

The 8GB GDDR5 from Sony get everybody in surprise... a lucky over the evolution of the GDDR5 manufacture.
