Btw, in older discussions I also said that I prefer 720p60 over 1080p30. I don't want to shift the topic but that's where my point originally came from.
For example here http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=5609509 and here: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=5242154

Most games I prefer 60fps too... fighting and races sims needs to be 60fps... FPS with 60fps are smooth too.

Yeah, I know we agree on this point. So to sum up: I can totally live with every next-gen game being at 720p60 and *decent* AA! I played a lot of games this gen at sub 1080p and I am totally fine with it! I don't want to sacrifice fps or detail or better textures or better poly-models for 1080p!

First time I've heard about a game that is 900p ._.

1600x900 isn't that obscure, I think. Also there are even games with dynamic resolution ;) To be honest, the resolution talk is of course originated a little bit in fanboy-wars. People on either side want to equip themselves to shoot against the others. While game quality is hard to fight with as it is subjective things like "baked lighting" and stuff like that that nobody cared about before immediately get the most important things in the world just to argue your favorite console. Resolution seems to be ammunition, too.

Most notebooks screens have native 900p resolution (my Lenovo T430 is).

Yes 60fps is always good. But I would like to point out that what is most importantly smooth in 60fps is the responsiveness of the game. Because the more fps the more it reduces in theory the input lag of any game. But some 30fps games have low input lag and some 60fps have not a so low input lag.

For instance I am replaying Metroid Prime on the Wii. But even with 60fps there is some lag added compared to the gamecube game, IMO, because of the Wii remote which has more input lag by default compared to a DS3 pad or a gamecube one (but the game is still awesome).

That's why I am not so dogmatic on this frame per second aspect (since I have seen PAL 25FPS footage, perfectly in sync, as smooth as 60FPS one and I am very sensitive to stuttering shown on games and movies), the most important IMO is the responsiveness of the game.

See for reference this interesting Eurogamer article on Input lag:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-lag-factor-article

The good news is that both the new consoles will have their input lag reduced on their new controllers. Maybe this subject would need its own thread...

If resolution was such a deciding factor for people, those people should just go and buy a high end pc.
People can complain about the price all they want but you essentially get what you pay for, if you want to choose how a game runs, at what resolution it runs, and at what framerate then it is the only option to consider.

1440p120f is something even the generation after the one coming will probably fail to achieve, yet can be achieved right now on a pc.

For consoles however, one thing completely overlooked in this topic is motion, in fast paced games no AA can look much better overall delivering a crisp image whereas an upscaled image with aa moving fast can look muddy, additionally motion blur can go a long way towards hiding "creepers" in aliasing.

Given that both of the new consoles have the tech available to implement some form of antialiasing without causing a massive hit to overall performance though this is pretty much a non issue, and i am willing to bet that if ryse was releasing in 3 years time, it would probably have been hitting 1080p30 comfortably.

Again, I ask, what 1440p monitor does 120fps?

I was curious about your questions with no awnser two times so I googled.

And for my surprise a 1440p@120hz monitor doesn't exist... there a few models that you can overclock but for 120fps you will need to go with 1080p.

Qnix, Xstar, Catleap and Overlord Tempest, or more specifically:

QNIX QX2710 Evolution 2  - 27″ 2560×1440 ~90Hz – 130Hz
X-Star DP2710 - 27″ 2560×1440 ~90Hz – 130Hz
Overlord Tempest X270OC - 27″ 2560×1440 ~90Hz – 130Hz
Overlord PCB Upgrade - 27″ 2560×1440 ~90Hz – 130Hz
Catleap 2B - 27″ 2560×1440 ~120Hz

These ranges are not absolute, either, my tempest x27 can hit 144Hz borderline, 145 and "no signal", but still a great deal higher than 60hz.

1080p with no AA means it's probably very aliased. Sure its native resolution matches the TV, but the aliasing is still there and noticeable. Just playing a game at the same native resolution as your television doesn't make Aliasing go away. 720p w/ AA means the image may not be as sharp as 1080p, but there will not be aliasing. It will depend on what you care about: Sharpness (1080p no AA) or cleanliness (720p + AA).
