1600x900 isn't that obscure, I think. Also there are even games with dynamic resolution ;) To be honest, the resolution talk is of course originated a little bit in fanboy-wars. People on either side want to equip themselves to shoot against the others. While game quality is hard to fight with as it is subjective things like "baked lighting" and stuff like that that nobody cared about before immediately get the most important things in the world just to argue your favorite console. Resolution seems to be ammunition, too.
