Forums - Sony - Naughty Dog: 120 More PS4 Devkits

seems the haters were right, ND hasn't started making any games for ps4. most have been nice taking a almost 2 year break since uncharted 3 came out.

RROD like problems for the PS4 confirmed !
Seriously though, why do they need 120 more ?

Are they planning to make a render farm? This gen they only needed 8 PS3s, they will use over 100 this gen? :D photorealism here we come if it comes true :D

I guess they had more than 1 render farm for PS3

And to make some maths... the ideal is that each programmer employee have his own devkit.

They only had roughly 20 coders working on each Uncharted game.  It'd be about 40 coders for the two teams.   Why do they need 100 more?  O_O

Are there separate test/dev kits at the moment?. So it would be possible that even people like QA/Design would be given a dev kit if there wasn't test kits (who knows they could be the same?) - That would certainly require many more machines. Though is someone saying they already had 120? - me is also confused.

someone really said that?

Maybe they have a couple of games in development that they haven't been talking about yet. Either way, it seems they will be putting out some of the best on the PS4.

so to develop a proper game on the ps4 you need 120 devkits? or are the devkits not stable enough?

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

Making guess work guys...

150 employees.

Coders: 30
Testers: 10
Others: 20

So at least 60 devkits are needed... now the render farms.

4 render farm with 8 consoles = 32 devkits

Total: 92 devkits.

I'm sure ND need more than 120 devkits... a Indie studio with 5 guys needs more than 3 devkits.

eh probably.   ..but it's more of an inferred statement from the "ps4 doesn't have any AAA games only indie" arguments.

No you don't need 120 dev kits to create a proper game. You can develop with a very small number of dev kits. It just depends on what you intend to do with them. 3rd parties have to pay for devkits and so generally have a smaller number of dev kits (and the rest would be test kits I believe). This company is owned by Sony so I guess everyone could be given devkits rather than a mix. Though I don't know if there is a difference on PS4 this time.

Further up someone suggested they connect their consoles together to rendering and rendering farm... so cutscenes etc can be done on a farm of consoles rather than a server/PC's.

Has nothing to do with the stability of devkits :)

they have two teams, the uncharted team and the last of us team.  the uncharted team is due as uncharted 3 released in late 2011 and the last of us team obviously more or less started their next game.
