Forums - Nintendo - My Idea For A "Super 3DS"/3DS Games On Wii U

Seeing how Sony is introducing the Vita TV which allows some Vita games to be played on the TV, I've had this idea of how Nintendo could cash in on 3DS games on the Wii U.

The "Super 3DS" is a throwback to the Super Game Boy on the SNES for young 'uns who don't get the reference, or the GBA Player for the GameCube:

But my idea is pretty different from the above, as we've come a long way with wireless tech that requring extra hardware IMO is uneccessary (besides, the hardware Nintendo needs to sell more is the Wii U anyway):

- You have a Wii U and 3DS

- Lets say you buy a 3DS game, like Luigi's Mansion 2.

- On the Wii U you have the option of downloading a "Home Play" version of Luigi's Mansion 2 for Wii U for $10 more (lets say). What does that do? Well in addition to being able to play Luigi's Mansion 2 on your 3DS on the go, you can now play it on your Wii U at home as well ... in 1080p HD with Wii U tablet/Wiimote controls (if the developer wishes to add more control options).

It's an easy way for devs to squeeze more money out of their 3DS games by simply offering an upscaled version that the Wii U shouldn't have much trouble running (Nintendo would probably have to create an all purpose 3DS emulator for the Wii U). And it gives the Wii U a lot more games to play.

To prevent Wii U owners from just buying the 3DS cartridge and not having a 3DS system, Nintendo could mandate that your 3DS/2DS system must be in range of your Wii U for "Home Play" to work. And of course you could play your game at home and seamlessly transfer your save data to your 3DS so you could continue to play on the road.

Sadly, upgrading a 3DS game into 1080p would probably cost quite a bit more than how much they would make back.

They would need an emulator that makes it easy to upscale the games so devs don't have to invest many resources into it. But I think the Wii U is powerful enough to emulate the 3DS.

The Dolphin emulator obviously on PC upscales Wii/GCN games to 1080p, I'm betting Nintendo could make a far better emulator than that.

I think Nintendo's bigger concern is that they want to avoid a situation where someone buys Animal Crossing for 3DS, then doesn't bother to get the Wii U version because they can already play the 3DS version on their Wii U this way. So that might be a bit of a concern now that Nintendo's home and console lineups have more overlap than ever before.

Wouldn't that be a "Super 2DS" given that most people don't have 3D TVs?

Honestly, it would be far more simple if Nintendo had a real account system. That way it would be easier to know how has which games, allowing you to download them cheaper.

But the idea of having DS/3DS games on WiiU is not bad.

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

The Wii U can communicate with 3DS systems so I don't see why it would be so hard to just play 3DS games on a TV through the Wii U (not talking about up-scaling graphics). So you use the 3DS touchscreen still but the top screen in on the TV.

I know MH3U works with 3DS systems but not entirely sure how the whole process works. I know you can have local multiplayer on MH3U with someone playing on the Wii U and someone playing on the 3DS.  This should be able to be achieved through the software side now and no hardware needed.  One should be able to play 3DS games without up-scaling for free through their Wii U.

Or simply Super DS.  That could work, too.  Anything, as long as they don't go with the name "Super D".  That name is owned and copyrighted by me and my penis.  We lost the battle for "Super C"....darn you Konami and your high powered lawyers.

*Shakes fist*

I just want them to hurry up and put 3DS games on the wii u eshop already.

my thoughts exactly.  a unified account and eshop system would be sweet too

3DS games would look horrible on most people's 1080p HDTV sets though, a 240p image blown up like is going to look horrid.

If Nintendo can manage to get a quick n' easy emulator running on the Wii U that lets it run a specialized 3DS ROM, that would be the ticket. I'd pay $10-$15 (though $15 is pushing it) extra to play Luigi's Mansion 2, Mario Kart 7, Bravely Default, etc.  at home on my HDTV in 720p or 1080p.

Could make it like GBA player on GC where the picture isn't the full screen but a smaller box. Wouldn't that help keep the picture semi decent if you kept some sort of dimension instead of full screen?
