FF7 isn't all that overrated. It's a great game. It's certainly not the best game, or even Final Fantasy, ever, but it's very, very good.

I often think people criticize Elder Scrolls and Zelda:TP because they feel cool doing so. Hipster gamers or something. Or maybe they just don't "get it", so they must be bad games. Either way, people should lay off. These are fine games, if they just aren't your thing, that doesn't make them bad.

And just to be a complete hypocrite, I'm going to state that I think no list of overrated games is complete without include Crono Trigger. 100% nostalgia, there. Not much going for it.

That's so weird, because Chrono Trigger still doesn't have nearly as much publicity as Final Fantasy or many other games.  It's highly rated, sure... but for good reason.  There were a handful of firsts that happened with Chrono Trigger.  It also has a very different story for its time, and even now it is pretty timeless.  To say it's all nostalgia and that it doesn't have much going for it definitely ignores how well the game was created.

Also, your argument for FF7 completely falls apart when you say Chrono Trigger should be in an overrated list.

1 Chrono Trigger SNES 1995 Role-Playing SquareSoft 0.28 0.00 2.02 0.01 2.31
1 Final Fantasy VII PS 1997 Role-Playing Sony Computer Entertainment 3.01 2.47 3.28 0.96 9.72

So if you look at the data, by what definition makes Chrono Trigger more overrated than FF7?

It's constantly praised by it's fans as one of the greatest RPGs ever made.  I mean all the time.  It seems to have gotten a surge in popularity lately too.  I never saw what was so great about it.  It felt very generic, other than the time-travel thing, which was decidedly hit-and-miss, as the prehistoric and ruined future worlds were awful.  The locations and characters are bland, dialogue is lacking, the storytelling doesn't measure up to other games of the era like FF6 and Super Mario RPG, the gameplay doesn't stand up to the test of time, either.  Yes, this is my opinion, but I don't think it deserves nearly the praise it recieves.

A lot of people would disagree with you.  There were many aspects of the story that were actually more than met the eye.  The characters, in my opinion, told more through their actions than their words.  The locations were certainly not bland, so yes I think this is much of your opinion on things.

Also, this video raises many interesting points about the characters and plot of the game.

So basically, what I'm trying to say is that you speak for yourself and your statement on how it should be on other peoples' lists holds no ground.

Whole-heartedly agree with GTA4, Modern Warfare 2, Smash Bros Brawl, Final Fantasy 7, and Skyrim.

Would also like to add Smash Bros Melee, Red Dead Redemption, Wind Waker, Majora's Mask, GTA San Andreas, Morrowind, Ico, Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavy Rain, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, all FIFA.

Wind Waker overrated? I thought that was the most hated Zelda game

Why do you hate all that is good in this world?

Even if I disagree about it being overrated, it is constantly praised as one of the best games of all time.

I think Final Fantasy X is slightly a lot overrated, I really like it but it was too linear...the towns are so small, the game was full of corridors...it shows outstanding CGI scenes with Zanarkand and Bevelle...and then you discover that all you can "explore" from that cities is a simple corridor...

What the CGI scenes show:

What you can actually "explore":

I don't know why, but the second time I played FFX I didn't feel the same as the first time, I suddenly started to notice all its flaws...

While true, I think the people that hate it overshadows the people that call it the best in the series. That's just the perception I have.

I can't see Xenoblade, The Last of Us (cool movie though) nor Portal in this list, it is wrong.

Xenoblade: boring gameplay (press A when the cooldown is gone), ugly noses.

TLOU had mediocre shooting and bad stealth (I played on normal, don't care if its better on survivor, it was locked and I'm not playing a cinematic game twice, the good part is the story and I have seen that). I was pretty much rushing the game to see the next cutscene. At least I was playing it with friends so I could just watch.

Portal felt like a tutorial, you can solve the puzzles just by looking at them and GLaDOS humor gets old fast.

About Pokémon: saying it doesn't do anything isn't a bad thing for me. I prefer a game that improves its formula everytime than one that tries something new and ends up being worse.
