Fayceless said: FF7 isn't all that overrated. It's a great game. It's certainly not the best game, or even Final Fantasy, ever, but it's very, very good. I often think people criticize Elder Scrolls and Zelda:TP because they feel cool doing so. Hipster gamers or something. Or maybe they just don't "get it", so they must be bad games. Either way, people should lay off. These are fine games, if they just aren't your thing, that doesn't make them bad. And just to be a complete hypocrite, I'm going to state that I think no list of overrated games is complete without include Crono Trigger. 100% nostalgia, there. Not much going for it. |
That's so weird, because Chrono Trigger still doesn't have nearly as much publicity as Final Fantasy or many other games. It's highly rated, sure... but for good reason. There were a handful of firsts that happened with Chrono Trigger. It also has a very different story for its time, and even now it is pretty timeless. To say it's all nostalgia and that it doesn't have much going for it definitely ignores how well the game was created.
Also, your argument for FF7 completely falls apart when you say Chrono Trigger should be in an overrated list. http://www.metacritic.com/game/ds/chrono-trigger http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation/final-fantasy-vii
So if you look at the data, by what definition makes Chrono Trigger more overrated than FF7?

It's constantly praised by it's fans as one of the greatest RPGs ever made. I mean all the time. It seems to have gotten a surge in popularity lately too. I never saw what was so great about it. It felt very generic, other than the time-travel thing, which was decidedly hit-and-miss, as the prehistoric and ruined future worlds were awful. The locations and characters are bland, dialogue is lacking, the storytelling doesn't measure up to other games of the era like FF6 and Super Mario RPG, the gameplay doesn't stand up to the test of time, either. Yes, this is my opinion, but I don't think it deserves nearly the praise it recieves.
