Forums - Movies & TV - Japanese animation legend Hayao Miyazaki set to retire.

Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary Oscar-winning Japanese animator known for directing Studio Ghibli movies such as Spirited AwayMy Neighbour Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service, is retiring. Studio Ghibli president Koji Hoshino made the announcement at the Venice Film Festival, where Miyazaki, 72, was not in attendance. Hoshino gave no details except to say that a press conference will be held in Tokyo later this week where Miyazaki himself will speak about the decision.

Miyazaki's latest — and apparently final — film is currently playing in Japanese theaters, and is in competition at Venice. Kaze Tachinu ("The Wind Rises") is a fictionalized biography of Jiro Horikoshi, who designed the Mitsubishi Zero aircraft used in World War II. Miyazaki directed eleven feature-length films in total, and also acted as producer and writer on other Ghibli movies such as Whisper of the Heart and Arrietty.

Alright, this makes me remarkably sad... Hayao Miyazaki's and Studio Ghibli's films are easily among my favorite movies and cinematic expreiences that I have ever watched. I can easily say, that words cannot express how much his films mean to me, they represent both my immense love for cinema, and animation, all wrapped up into a wide array of masterpieces. So, is anyone else sad to see him leaving the industry?

Is his son bad at animation?

Very. Maybe you've seen this recent work of his:

=l

I do not have the words to describe the level of respect I have for his body of work as a whole. He is an artist of the first order.

May the Totoro be with you, Miyazaki-san.

He isn't that bad, I thought poppy hill was a pretty great, but as long as tales from earthsea exists, i just cant be happy about this :(

This man made some of my favorite animated films ever. Spirited Away is what got me into Anime. Very sad to see him retire.

Not really, it's just that he's being judged against his father.  No one is going to win that.  Tales from Earthsea is considered bad, though I thought some elements were quite good, with a script that didn't do the books justice.  Truth be told, he shouldn't have been directing a major film with almost no experience, which is how his father supposedly felt, as well.  It's not like Hayao Miyazaki jumped right into making Masterpieces, either.

I've heard that his second film was pretty good, though I haven't seen it myself.  I keep forgetting to watch it, though I like the premise.

Here's your one last masterpiece, and a fitting farewell from arguably the best animator to have ever lived.
