Not really, it's just that he's being judged against his father. No one is going to win that. Tales from Earthsea is considered bad, though I thought some elements were quite good, with a script that didn't do the books justice. Truth be told, he shouldn't have been directing a major film with almost no experience, which is how his father supposedly felt, as well. It's not like Hayao Miyazaki jumped right into making Masterpieces, either.
I've heard that his second film was pretty good, though I haven't seen it myself. I keep forgetting to watch it, though I like the premise.
