they did the same with the original 3ds...
and look at it now...

How were the sales during those weeks between the announcement and the actual price cut?

they werr going down and hit 12k in US then jumped up to 52k with 2 days of price cut, then 90k second week in US! No new games either

Three weeks away... no major releases between now and the price drop, unless you consider W101, so I think this is the perfect time to announce it. Right as the big guns start to hit.

The Screamapillar is easily identified by its constant screaming—it even screams in its sleep. The Screamapillar is the favorite food of everything, is sexually attracted to fire, and needs constant reassurance or it will die.

Well it worked for 3DS so for some reason Nintendo believes it will work for WiiU.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

If they pulled an Ambassador Program 2, some might be motivated to get the console before the price is reduced...
I knew a few people who got the 3DS before the price went down to get the GBA games...

Have a nice day...

Many retailers offer price protection anyway for the 15 people who wanted to buy a Wii U in early September anyhow.

Why? Because they're desperate, that's why. Even with a price drop and big games releasing soon, the Wii U is probably going to end up with a really bad 2014, I'll be surprised if they manage more than 8 million units for the whole year.

Dropping the price after less than one year on the market is a sign of weakness from Nintendo and this might cause them to keep losing money on the hardware well into next year. This is isn't a bad move per say, the whole concept (or lack thereof) of the Wii U was a bad move, in my opinion.

They're in deep trouble and they know it, this price cut is a sure sign of that, if anything.

While I agree Nintendo is somewhat desperate, it's doesn't make sense that they dropped the 3DS price by $80 and gave an ambassadors program only 6 months in the market while the system was selling waaay better than current Wii U sales. A truly big desperate measure would be much more drastic than this.

Nintendo and PC gamer

...What I'm really surprised is that they didn't annouce all this important info in a Ndirect.

Nintendo Direct is mostly for people that already have the console, so the 2DS announcement would make sense but the price reduction not so much.
