I think the 2DS is significant though in that it forshadows the next Nintendo handheld, which IMO will be a tablet like form factor with the ability to play 3DS games and even have Wii U ports unified on one console with an HD resolution (single) display. Possibly with the ability to wirelessly beam a video signal to the television. Hence the recent unification of Nintendo's handheld and console dev teams.

Will the Wii U ports only use half of the screen?

Full screen.

I can see the 3DS ports having the ability for the user to decide how the split-screen is divvied up, but I imagine one large central screen.

3DS games will run in HD resolution.

Interesting that the European red 2DS will apparently have a white front, as opposed to the US one, which will be black.

How many inches will the screen have?

I'm not sure obviously, I'm guessing Nintendo has multiple screen-sizes being tested in their R&D as we speak though. I think 6.2 inches like the Wii U tablet, perhaps slightly bigger, might not be a bad range to guess.

The funniest part is that it's likely Iwata is going to be right. Again. And all the Iwata-haters will have to back down when it's proven he in fact is very competent. With all that news today and the things we knew were already happening, Nintendo will have made a gigantic profit after the end of this FY.

More mainstream media have picked up on this story...
The 2DS is the main headline in the Technology section of BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat website...
They state that they are targeting kids, that it's out in Europe on the twelfth, and that it's all about profits...
They also throw some shade at the Wii U, but nothing that hasn't been written before...

Have a nice day...

So we are definitely talking about a terrible size for a handheld. Do you really think it's a good idea for Nintendo to destroy their handheld market?

Oh wait...

Aren't you the guy who also proposed that Nintendo would have been better off by making a more hardcore home console? Essentially what the GC was to the PS2.

You can poo poo the idea all you want but the writing is pretty much on the wall.

It's not something I see as imminent but still 2-3 years out, by which time the 3DS/2DS will have had a full hardware cycle under its belt.

And yes I have proposed that Nintendo releasing a Wii HD in 2010 or 2011 with a slightly upgrade chipset + more RAM (ala the DSi) and the ability to run newer games in 720p for $149.99 would've been a good idea and then a "New Nintendo Entertainment System" type product for 2012 that would be aimed to older consumers initially. "Wii" should've remained a brand tied to the Wiimote/motion gaming and served the role of a entry level console.

The GameCube didn't fail because it was a traditional console it failed because Nintendo gave Sony an 18 month headstart for no good reason and then proceeded to shoot themselves in the foot five times by making the console purple, not having a successor to GoldenEye, and making unwanted changes to several of their main IP.

Incredibly smart move. It's a baby proofed super cheap 3DS. Brilliant. Now they are covering every market.

Young Children: 2DS

Everybody: 3DS

Old People and Gamers: 3DS XL
