Forums - Gaming - So PS4 Is Basically Going To Win This Gen, Right?

If Sony doesn't get there shite together and seal Titanfall for sometime shortly after the XBO release, that will cause some serious problems for them. Titanfall will be such a system seller for XBO that it would be worth it for Sony to put one of their own teams in charge of porting it to ps4.

Sony also has to stop laying down and dying when it comes to advertising/deals in US and Europe. MS is doing what it always does: getting deals and advertising itself with the biggest third party games--COD, BF4, Titanfall, Fifa--to make XBO feel like the coolest console. Still, after 10 yrs, Sony still hasn't learned MS's tendencies enough to get one step ahead of them for once. These 4 games/deals alone will be major gamechangers if Sony doesn't step in and disrupt them somehow (committing to advertising these games with ps4 logo at the end, making a Fifa bundle in Europe, sealing Titanfall, etc.)

Name a single multiplayer only title, that is not an MMO, which is a system seller.  Titanfall is a not an MMO and multiplayer.  It is also a new IP.  Why the heck is it going to be a system seller?

Sony did a bunch of multiplayer only FPS stuff, and they were not system sellers.  Microsoft had Shadowrun, which bombed.

Reality check:

Virtual boy sales from July - Dec 95 = 350,000 (Jp/NA only) or 70,000/mth

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_Boy

WiiU sales from Jan - June '13 = 550,000 (all markets) or 92,000/mth

http://ca.ign.com/articles/2013/07/31/exactly-how-bad-is-the-nintendo-situation

You take Europe and the rest of the world out of that equation and it's selling Virtual Boy numbers.  In fact, for the last four month worse than Virtual Boy dispite being available in far more regions.

Id say dont waste your time but if you dont care then go for it. However, i warn you that you are talking to someone who thinks nintendo is profiting on wii u sales already and will drop the price alongside a flagstaff title and it will increase the sales to unprecedented levels of 700% and maintain those sales through its lifespan

You are right of course.  And I don't know why I let Zero999 get under my skin.   I kinda regret posting that now.  I feel like I just kicked my best friend (that is to say Nintendo and the many fine Nintendo fans on this site) in the balls with that sales comparison.   Maybe it's true but no one wants to hear it.

2013 is not finished you know and with the holidays, Pokemon, Zelda or MH don't worry it will end selling really well this year too. Be careful how you interpret those numbers...

It's an indication nothing more. 3DS is going to be huge during the holidays for sure. However, the decline is also too significant to ignore considering a price cut and the XL redesign have already taken place.

I'm not sure you understand what that graph says.  It doesn't indicate anything, other than 3DS sold better than DS through years one and two.  The third data point is incomplete, so no trend can be interpreted.  That's not a continuous graph, but rather a connection of descrete data points with straight lines.

The DS was selling more that 380,000 units weekly during August 2006 compared to 160,000 for the 3DS now. There is an obvious decline. But yeah, I misunderstood the graph. Still ...

I can imagine the PS4 actually stumbling around a bit in 2014, after the launch effect wears off. ESPECIALLY if it doesn't release in Japan quickly enough, giving the Wii U extra momentum. And even if the PS4 does win this gen, there's a difference between NES/PS2 style dominance and Wii style fadness.

Well, sometimes you have to tell someone they are fat and shouldnt be wearing a tube top and booty shorts for them to get the picture, even if they are your best friend. The Wii U will be a solid console like every Nintendo console and will have just as many high quality first party titles as the rest. It just wont live up to the sales people got use to over the Wii's life and may even be closer to the GC/N64 level sales and people need to accept it (or at least be reasonable in their optimism).

"win the gen" is an understatement. Sony is about to reclaim a position of absolute dominance.

"What makes you think Sony aren't going to "do a thing"".

really?really?really?really?really?really?really?really?

you can't possibly have understood that, you must be trolling. I'll draw for you regardless:

his stance: sony NEVER HAS TO DO A THING (=/= won't do a thing) to win, victory is always theirs. But nintendo only has a chance if they get lucky and score a big hit.

do you understand now how nonsensical that way of thinking is?

Calm down. Where did he say Sony "never has to do a thing"? You're just putting words in his mouth at this point.

he says nintendo needs a hit to suceed and acts as if sony doesn't have to do a thing. I'm not putting words on anyone's mouth.

He was saying Nintendo needs a "catch" similar to what the Wii had with motion controls, and it's not like he hasn't got anything to back up his statement, current Wii U sales agree with him. When did he say it wouldn't succeed without "a hit" either? He just said it would be difficult to win this generation.

As for acting as if Sony do not have to do anything, he did not explicity say that either, although he didn't do much wrong by not mentioning any steps that Sony will have to take to make the PS4 a success. So far, Sony have done almost everything right with the PS4, they've courted Indie and 3rd party developers, they've developed a powerful yet small and cheap console and they've handled PR pretty well. Once again, pre-order numbers justify his assumption. 3rd party support basically guarantees that the PS4 will be somewhat a success anyway, the same applies to Xbox One, hence why most people still believed it would sell reasonably well despite the PR and policy cock-ups.

When it has its post launch drought we will see how well it fairs and who knows if we see the 3DS/Vita situation all over again. Maybe even those pokemon figures will be the system seller for Wii U. Maybe the PS4/ Xbone will have the YLOD/RROD problems and fans wont want to deal with it until the next revision of the systems are released. Maybe the consoles will be fully hacked near launch and piracy will kick in sooner than expected for the consoles. Maybe their online infrastructure gets hacked again and consumers refuse to even consider buying it now. There are too many variables that to declare a winner now. I like your enthusiasm, but as a great VGChartz member once said "it's a marathon, not a sprint."

PS2-style dominance is possible, but it depends more on what Nintendo and Microsoft can do than anything Sony will do. PS2 did what it did because Microsoft was still ironing out the kinks of being a console manufacturer and Nintendo's creative focus was lost at sea. If Nintendo makes GameCube-esque game-design mistakes with Wii U and Microsoft brings any more major screw-ups to the table, Sony can conquer utterly. If both keep their heads level, then they'll give PS4 a run for its money, and possibly outshine it.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I don't think PS2 style dominance is possible simply because they'd have to get like Call of Duty, GTA, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Destiny exclusive or something for it to be comparable, and that's never going to happen.

I think they will win this console cycle but it'll be more like ...

PS4 - 95 million
XB1 - 70 million
Wii U - 35 million
