Forums - Nintendo - W101 is going to be a gargantuan flop

Tagged games:

The thing is that the platform holders need to try multiple different games and genres and keep the costs low and the risk is low.

But the key is then to use that title in other ways to get value out of it, bundle it, provide if for free on a subscription service (PSN) etc etc. That way the few million loss is pretty much mitigated and you can continue to try other ideas.

Normal publishers cannot get away with this but the console developers can, so i dont know why Nintendo are not trying more varied ranges of games.

I did put on eurogamer a few weeks back that i thought this game wasnt going to sell and that the 30k being shipped to Japan was a sign, as well as no advertising, but i got so down voted it wasnt worth carrying on the conversation with them :)

Yea it is set up to flop. Quirky game where you control a group insteaed of one character... it's going to achieve "Little King's Story" numbers.

Now im starting to Wonder if the same will happen to Bayonetta 2?

No.

Bayonetta is a known IP, doesn't have a confused target audience like W101, and will likely get better reviews.

Even if they repeat their stupidity of shipping 30k copies for Japan and releasing it in the US the same week as COD Black Ops 3 or something, it's almost guaranteed to do better than W101. It probably won't be a multi-million seller, but it won't be a flop to this absurd degree.

Not to the same degree at all. Bayonetta has a few things going for it:

A) Recognition. Core gamers know what Bayonetta is, it doesn't have new IP-dom going against it

B) Easier to understand. DMC-esque action game rather than some weird Pikmin-Viewtiful Joe-plus maybe a bit of Gradius hybrid

C) Tits (which at least gets attention, especially compared to stylized little superheroes)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Well i dont think its stupidity shipping 30k in Japan for 101 considering where its charted. Seems like it was a sensible move.

I think Bayonetta 2 will chart better than 101/pilkamin but will struggle imho.... it all depends on how many of those fans actually went out and purchased a wii-u, and i am not convinced yet they have.

It won't outsell the original across both PS3 and 360, (1.94m) but it has a shot at outselling the 360 version. (860k)

It won't just be fans of the original picking up Bayo 2 though; Nintendo fans who didn't get the first one could be enticed into getting the second now it's a platform exclusive. Contrary to stereotype, many Nintendo gamers do not shy away from "adult" games.

Yeah Im thinking it could do around a million, only thing is im not sure its a game made for the Nintendo audience, seems like Nintendo are hoping for this game to bring over some of the Ps xbox crowd. Maybe they should put the main character in SSB for some advertising.
