The thing is that the platform holders need to try multiple different games and genres and keep the costs low and the risk is low.
But the key is then to use that title in other ways to get value out of it, bundle it, provide if for free on a subscription service (PSN) etc etc. That way the few million loss is pretty much mitigated and you can continue to try other ideas.
Normal publishers cannot get away with this but the console developers can, so i dont know why Nintendo are not trying more varied ranges of games.
I did put on eurogamer a few weeks back that i thought this game wasnt going to sell and that the 30k being shipped to Japan was a sign, as well as no advertising, but i got so down voted it wasnt worth carrying on the conversation with them :)
