Forums - Gaming - A quick next gen performance analysis, 3 months before launch.

Which console and why?

PS4, launch line up 65 30.95%

Xbox 1, launch line up 35 16.67%

PS4, because you prefer Sony consoles 90 42.86%

Xbox 1 because you prefer Microsoft consoles 11 5.24%

Both 9 4.29%

Total:210

Personally i am just glad there is a new generation. The graphics on this gen have been nice but they could certainly be improved.

As for games, some people keep waving the Exclusives in peoples faces as the reason why certain consoles are better than others. I am sure for some who might prefer Killzone or a Forza, thats a perfectly good reason. But i believe there are many users out there who might like 3rd party games, and want the best experience possible.

As the moment my games ordered are: AC4BF, Watch_Dogs, BF4 and Killzone. Probably pick up a couple more if i can, but for me its all about open world goodness (though KZ does look amazing). So i wouldn't discount users buying to improve the consoles they have. One guy i know is buying a PS4 (he was Xbox previously) just for AC4 alone...

I agree that Sony need to do more to promote their big games for next year (there is no room for more big games this year IMHO)... but I think VGA's might be the best place for that. The consoles will only have just launched and they might have got more consoles on the shelves for the Xmas period... why not throw in a new Naughty Dog game or SSM... that would just push a few more people to buy. But if they do that now, not sure it will be as powerful as people wont be getting their console on day 1 now if they announce anything. It's lost PR.

Those gamestop figures are interesting. Has anything changed in terms of orders on Amazon or other sites since Gamescom?

a lot of people are put off from placing pre orders for games as many stores now charge to pre order and the current economic climate is still not as secure as it was when the previous gen started, as i've seen plenty of times the big supermarkets have discounts on new games compared to game specific stores, when the 360 launched many games cost £50 yet ASDA (part of walmart in the UK) were charging less than £40 and no doubt it will be the same situation with many supermarkets offering games at lower than RRP prices which these game specific stores wont be able to do.

i still dont get how a game is considered poor due to low pre orders, all pre orders give is a rough estimate of how well the game could sell however when a game launches and it turns out to be good word of mouth soon spreads and the game starts flying off the shelf but even then is that still an indication of a good game just because its popular, many fantastic games get over shadowed by the more popular games.

There should be a "PS4 - I don't want Kinect" option.

There should be  PS4 - year one line up and Xb one - year one line up options.

OT: If PS4 merely launches with parity to Xb one in USA it's a massive shift back towards Sony in that market. Remember in USA Xbox360 is 1.6:1 vs PS3 Lifetime. If PS4 launches at 1.1:1 or greater vs Xb one then that's a bitchslap for MS.

I believe these stats are only daily but on gamestop's website this is the order of the top 20 xboxone/ps4  game preorders. I'll exclude console bundles since gamestop isn't selling anymore ps4 console bundles. Is the order similar for total preorders?

1. Call of Duty: Ghosts Prestige edition (Xbone)
2. Call of Duty: Ghosts Prestige edition (PS4)
3. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PS4)
4. Forza 5 Limited Edition (Xbone)
5. Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbone)
6. Watch Dogs (PS4)
7. Call of Duty: Ghosts Hardened edition (Xbone)
8. Assassin's Creed IV (PS4)
9.
Call of Duty: Ghosts Hardened edition (PS4)
10. Battlefield 4 (PS4)
11. Battlefield 4 (Xbone)
12. Watch Dogs (Xbone)
13. Assassin's Creed IV (Xbone)
14. Assassin's Creed IV Limited Edition (PS4)
15. Dead Rising 3 (Xbone)
16. TitanFall (Xbone)
17. Assassin's Creed IV Limited Edition (Xbone)
18. Fifa 14 (PS4)
19. Ryse (Xbone)
20. Destiny (Xbone)

Good find, I make that 12 XOne to 8 PS4. Also, 4 XOne exclusives (Forza, Dead Dising, TitanFall and Ryae) compared to...no PS4 exclusives, which is surprising. Maybe I am just missing Killzone on that list, but the lack of Knack is surprising after Gamescom. Maybe it has more of an effect here in Europe, though.

You can't just randomly put games into winners and losers categories, that is just your own opinion. Quite frankly, I think Dead Rising looks rubbish and many people think the same of Ryse.

Also, I am 90% sure that most people buying new consoles this year are going to have mostly mutliplatform line ups. This is mostly meaningless conjecture

Numbers. Not opinions........

And where are  you getting these numbers

he works at gamestop, he knows the pre-orde numbers

haha jk munk. You'll learn all about BenV soon. I would suggest reading all his posts since the e3 presentation. Truly some massive bombshells in there.

The crazy thing about the PS4, none of its big games have been announced yet and its going to sell like crazy. God, can you imagine what Uncharted looks like?

I'm actually kinda hoping Naughty Dog do a new IP and maybe do Uncharted 4 later.  I've had my fill of that series for now though I suppose once I see it I may change my mind.  Also SSM, ND, MM, and GG's second team have yet to reveal their projects for PS4 which have to pretty far along in development considering their last games were in 2011.  I bet many of them get out by holiday 2014.  I'm hoping it goes

ND=new IP (not realistic but create a new world like Crash and Jak before it

SSM=GoW Norse (new character and new mythology.  I want to face Thor on PS4!)

MM=New IP though they already said its built around the PS4 meeting demonstration

GG=Not even sure cause I already know it's a new IP but don't want an open world shooter RPG since Destiny is already doing that.  Though it wouldn't hurt to have 2...

New Ip's are nice, but the PS4 would sell much better with a Uncharted 4/ God of War 4 or Gran Turismo PS4 announcement. There's no big games for the system yet aside from Killzone and later on Infamous.

Gran Turismo is fine and they should be able to put that out fast with the easier to program for X86.  God of War: (insert cool Norse subtitle here) could sell well like KZ seems to be without a number as long as you make it clear that this is the MAIN team and is a REAL GoW game.  Uncharted can come later but I think LoU proved that ND is getting to be known for their name not their IP.  It's sold 3m after releasing in the Summer a couple months ago.  They could release a new IP and have it do millions with that talent.  Think Titanfall but for PS4 (not in gameplay or anything just being hyped because of the dev).

Good to know, I hope we can get more updates in the coming months. Like if the release dates change people's minds.

I have a quick question about these numbers, Ben.

Presumably PS4 console pre-orders are tracking above XBone based on what you say in the OP.

You've listed software into categories of "winners" & "losers". Are you measuring this based on just overall numbers (i.e. basing it on a certain cutoff point); or relative to the number of pre-orders of the console?

What I suppose you've gathered I'm getting at is; are Knack & Driveclub higher than any XBone games which you considered software "winners"; or are they just the lowest overall?
