I guess the real question is exactly how cheap MS is making dedicated servers for 3rd party developers. I am pretty sure its dirt cheap and probably at cost or even lower. MS is really looking to add this as an advantage and the fact that COD and I believe BF4 will also be using MS servers on their end could make the X1 the MP box for FPS games.

BF4 has dedicated servers on all consoles, not just Xbox.

In fact I'm pretty sure even Bad Company 2 and BF3 already have dedicated servers.

That was private hosting which you had to pay out of your own pocket or someone else had to pay I should say.  I am talking about free dedicated servers which is something totally different.

Private Hosting is only an option. People can rent servers so that they can set the rules themselves. That thing will also happen with the Xbox One, Microsoft won't be giving away free private servers. Not gonna happen.

Dedicated servers are nothing new at all, not on Xbox, not on PlayStation and certainly not on PC. And believe it or not, it is possible without TEH CLOUD. If Activision wants dedicated servers for CoD on PS3 or PS4, they can do that without a problem. My prediction is: Every platform will get dedicated servers for CoD, as Activision sees the additional income from private servers.

EA has a few dedicated servers but the majority are the ones purchased from players paying 30 a month from the venturbeat company.  Also EA has cut back a lot on dedicated servers because it is expensive to keep them running all the time.

They still have EA servers up and running (I should know, I play BF3 almost every day). Also they cut back the servers because people kept renting out their own servers and tons of official EA servers ended up being completely empty. For instance, in the game mode Rush there is only 75 tickets for the attacking squad. People hate that because it's too low and when you can set up your own rules on your own server players started going to the servers that had 100+ tickets. Even now I can find EA servers that are completely empty because they don't like the set rules.

Noticed I say they cut them back not completly dropped them.  Also the list of user paid servers are also much lower than before.  I am thinking that MS solution of being able to spin up a dedicated server when needed is a much better solution as you do not have to have servers up and running waiting on players but instead you only have to have enough services for your current player base.

That player rented servers turned me off BF3. If that crap happens in BF4 I'm not buying it.
