I also don't know why you'd think half a million is  too little.  Platinum games is a small company so won't have too many people behind it developing it.  Development costs are nothing than salaries plus the cost of the products they're using for the game.  There are better looking indie titles that are developed for far less.

No way whatsoever.  Have you seen the amount of animation it has?  All the art assets and 3D modeling?  All the voice acting?  This game cost far more than an indie title.

Guys... what the hell? the *Stores* decide how many copies they want to order! This is not Nintendo's decision, japanese retail stores simply didn't order more than 30k copies. What is Nintendo supposed to do? Increase the shipment twofold without asking retailers?

Well I just preordered mine, after the Fire Emblem debacle I don't want to be without it around launch and I like my games in physical form.

It looks like it has a very similar budget to the rest of high profile projects (maybe slightly below Bayonetta, but certainly as much as Vanquish).

Kamiya already confirmed it's 1.5 times the budget of Bayonetta.

We're looking at what is far and away his most expensive game yet.

Wow. Do you have a link?

That would ensure this to lose a ton of money.

"Kamiya added that The Wonderful 101 has cost the developer 1.5 times that of Bayonetta - which was concerned a commercial failure despite its critical praise."

I'd point out Bayonetta sold about  450k at full price for first week across all regions, translating to about $9 million going to Sega assuming the US margins are true for the rest of the world.

That wasn't enough to cover their costs, price cuts ensued, and later at nearly 2 million units sold across two platforms, they supposedly barely made a profit.

HOT DAMN!!! this game is looking to flop; it will need the most incredible legs to break even

Technically we don't know if this is how much the stores actuallly requested, or if stores requested more and yet Nintendo decided to hold off to create demand for the digital version.

If stores in Japan requested over 60k for the 360 version of Bayonetta, I have a real hard time believing stores didn't request more for an entirely exclusive Platinum game on a system that's nowhere near the 360's level of failure in Japan.

Either they're driving up demand for the digital version by starving retail, or they didn't market the game anywhere near as much as they should have.

I think this may become the norm for titles Nintendo doesn't expect to sell well from now on -- a very small initial retail shipment with an emphasis on pushing people to purchase the game digitally where Nintendo earns a fatter profit margin per sale.

They kinda did this with Fire Emblem in the West too, but I think the first shipment went so well that they decided to add a healthy restock.

Expect the same for X and perhaps Bayonetta 2 also.

If they are indeed focusing on the West with this title as some have speculated...
Then they might want to start focusing on the West...

Have a nice day...

Maybe the retailers aren`t sure of it`s appeal - also due to pre-orders, i think - and aren`t ordering a lot.
If the game sells out it will do well. Can`t say if it will make a profit in the end, but since Nintendo is paying the bill, Platinum has got nothing to worry about.

Well least they aren't over producing the game, if it sells less than 30k then they wont need to make more copies....My guess is it will sell well over 30k in japan though before its done and dusted.

or the more likely scenario is the stores order as much to cover as many as the preorders are suggesting it will sell
